Help!! strange timing question...
I'm trying to troubleshoot a timing problem for a friend with a GSR.
No matter what he does, he cant get the timing to advance more than 12 degrees.
I had him recheck his cams and crank and they line up perfectly.
idle is at 800 with an aftermarket TB.
any ideas on what else could be wrong?

the tps will not affect timing. certainly not retard it like that.

If I am understanding the question right, you could have possibly skipped a tooth on the timing belt. I had this happen to me, and i couldnt get the timing to go past 8 degrees no matter how much I adjusted the distributor.

I had a friend that couldnt get the timing past 5deg. and told us all the time, I double checked it. But what did we find out a few months later? It had jumped a tooth.

I keep insisting the same thing, timing belt off a tooth. Had another person this happened to and turned out to be the same. As brokenvtec said, he checked it yesterday, so i have to assume he and his mechanic know to check that. Thats why i'm a bit dumbfounded about it at this point.

re did everything then nothing, then swaped hondatas with a friend of mine (very similar setup) and installed his injectors and the same point where my timing was at 12.....with his setup was 24 degrees....
it is interesting. i set the base timing in the Romeditor to match what his base timing was. the only thing could be that your friends chip is set for a different base timing or his tuner put tons of advance on his chip. Your base timing is quite retarded so we are starting our ignition curves from that baseline.
you will be trying a stock ecu as i suggested to see if the stock computer still shows a lot of retarded distributor timing.

I'm not a tuner (and can't even pretend to be one) but I think there is a program somewhere in the computer that is electronically moving the timing back to a predetermined (programmed) maximum amount. You could set the distributor to 80 degress advance and it is brought back to spec electronically.
