Help! Cant pass DE Emissions sniffer
Ok guys, This stuff sucks, and I wish I would never have to deal with these folks at the DMV. Basic run down: b18c, large turbo, big injectors, Tuned, but tuned on my exhaust 3" cut-out. (Ran out of time to modify full stock exhaust on tuning). I have been able to pass everything excpet the hydrocarbon test. Here are my numbers:
first run: 93 octane, catco cat, warmed up car
low rpm- 1097 high rpm- 1659
second run: 1/4 93 octane, 3-16oz bottles of 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol, car warmed up
low rpm- 1736 high rpm- 2123
I need to be under 220 on both parts. I even ran it through 2x on the second run just to be sure something stupid happened or whatever.... the numbers were within 30 of each other.
I dont understand how it got worse, unless the water mix in it is hurting me. I think I need to use anhydrous alcohol, so thats in the works to try along with getting a genuine honda cat. (im using a catco cat that I think was used on a GM truck... hell if I know). Also going to try using 87 octane fuel with this combo to see if I get a more complete burn. I am swapping out plugs to a hotter 5 range as a pose the the colder plugs used for boost.
Any insight or help would be great guys, and also does anyone know if you can drive the car out of state with temp. tags?
Thanks,
Greg.

How much timing are you running? Can you switch to E85? My tuner was able to advance my timing just enough to burn everything so I passed

Im not sure how much timing is in the tune, as I was not there to see it go down, but I soppose I could advance distributer timing... Im kinda wary about that but as long as i drive the car out of boost it should be ok. E85 is not an option at the moment, really wanted to get it though via standard pump gas.

I can go back for a re-tune on stock exhaust to get it dialed in, but im looking at 150-300 bucks more for it, so I wanted to explore other options and leave that as a last resort.

Pull an injector clip off before you go through the line. It will run like *** but it will lower it. I was having the same problem. Did that and it read almost 0 haha. The guy was like wtf happened. lol

If I pull a clip, it wont rev up though will it?
guy will fail me if it has a shitty idle i think... worth a shot though., Im running s300. Ill pull up a log and see what the timing is.

The only way I would feel comfortable messing with tune is to take it back to Charm city. I dont have a wideband, but ill get the timing map for you guys. Its a bit conservative I think, the car is a DD. Will advancing dizzy timing help?

Not sure about the clip... Up to you if you want to pay for a retune. I run an s300 too, Id be happy to share the timing I used to pass. It will not run great but they will never hit boost. Its only on their dyno for like 45 seconds

its not even a dyno, i put car in neutral and they take reading at low, and high rpms, like 1500 and 2500 respectively. No rollers/load at all.

they will not fail you if its not idling perfect. It worked for me everytime and it will still rev up. You just dont wanna drive it like that. Pull it before you go through the line and put it back on when you come out. Simple as that
