I'm not a happy camper...

I installed my brand new honda distributer into my B18C1 a while back and didn't really have any problems other than the fact it was a little snug going in the cam. I installed it exactly how the Helms shows it (with the slot on the key aligned with the machined back housing).

We tried starting it for the first time 2 days ago...Result?

The timing belt jumped the intake cam gear because the Distributer was binding the cam. I prayed to god the pistons didn't hit intake valves (fully rebuilt JG ported head)...but we did a compression test today. 1-4...130...130...125...0.

Pulled the head and its now at my machine shop awaiting new Ferra valves for #4.

To remidy this problem, I just took off the snap ring on the distributer key and turned it 180 degrees so the line is on the other side (opposite from what my helms says ).

To make a long story short...

This whole problem could have been avoided if either a) the key was machined correctly or b) helms actually gave you the correct information.

Its funny how they are supposed to machine the key so you can't install it the wrong way...yet mine bolted in just fine.

Ya when i first bought my motor i decided to do some tune up work. I was getting ready to do a timing belt, so i turned the motor over a couple times. I found out that the cam marks weren't lining up. The distributor was broken and jumped the intake cam a couple teeth. Luckily I just needed a new distributor and my valves didn't get broken, well i don't think so. The motor started up fine.

I do have to admit though...that it was pretty sweet to see a huge flame shoot out the intake manifold...

I was working with a friend once and I didn't even think to tell him how to put on the distributor. It is very possible to put the distributor on 180 degrees off, while he was trying to start it I watched as the distributor wobbled up and down binding the cam. It was pretty ugly, I had to replace the keyed end of the distributor.

It was snug because you put it in backwards, you don't line up the mark to the distributor, you offset the tabs to the same side the cam is offset. Simple mistake, i've seen it happen a few times, but don't blame anybody else...

Well...for once, I'm kinda sorry that I refered to the book on this one.
