to Gutt cat, or not?
if you gut it your car will sound like it doesn't have a cat and you'll probably get pulled over, especially with a bit of smoke comin out at WOT...I wouldn't bother, really. It'll pass visual, but if you have to get tested again you'll need to buy a new one. http://www.testpipe.com has straightpipes that have stock cat heat shields, if you really want to do it right.

3'' carsound cat flows almost as well as a test pipe so by gutting the cat im sure you'll have worse flow.
really? is that proven?

what about gutting stock cats? Is it better to just cut the flanges off and weld a test pipe in? Does the larger hallowed out chamber of a gutted cat create turbuance? Atleast thats what I am beinging to get from ther posts on here

I would not gut the cat if you are in CA. Get a test pipe.
the butt dyno seemed to pick up nice gains upon gutting the stock cat.
i figured a gutted cat would do better. the whole "bottleneck" turbulence concept makes me wonder though.
