Has anybody actually measured the pressure drop thru the charge piping at the 800 WHP level? Saying, "You definitely need to be using 3" IC piping" seems like a suggestion based on hearsay more then anything.

Even with 2.5" IC piping, the charge isn't moving all that fast. It's still well within the range of non-turbulent airflow velocities.

I'd assume that garrett made the outlet 3" for a reason. And the air is moving fast, i don't know what you consider fast. It's about mass flow through a given tube size. "turncoat" i belive ran all the numbers and even at 400hp there was a pressure drop through 2.5" pipes that was almost nothing in 3".

Oh, and boostfed found pretty good gains by bigger piping and bigger t/b above 600whp.

Let's not forget, the GT42R was made for a 10.7 L turbo diesel, not a 1.8L Honda. The idea of it being 'made that way for a reason' doesn't exactly hold up here as we are using this turbo for a much different application then what the turbo was designed for.

I'm sure a 10.7 L has the air moving pretty fast. Fast in my mind is up around .5 mach velocity.

I'm sure 3" can show gains over 2.5" at a given boost level. But you can turn up the boost to make up for it. But if he already has the 2.5" tubing done, I don't think it would be worth it to remake the piping.

If you're putting a 42r on a damn honda then you better be looking for every last bit of power. If you can pick up 30+hp by changing ic pipes, then you better be all over that. If that doesn't matter so much to you, then get a turbo more suited to your application. Either way, you're moving a huge mass of air and the bigger pipes will have less pressure drop.

Which is why I asked if anybody had actually done any testing to verify that 3" IC piping is actually beneficial or if it was just a 'bigger is better' statement.

Mathematically, it doesn’t seem worth it, which is why I asked for empirical data.

Cort, stop crying, baby.
By the way, give me a call, I need your number so I can make late night anonymous calls asking for sucky sucky.

3" ic piping is DEFINITELY beneficial at that power level! And no, I don't have proof but I talked to Al from Dynoflash about his setup the last time he was at Buschers shop for the dyno shootout and the 35r he had was maxed out and he was looking for more power. He goes ahead with the 40r and WAM, no power gains? I wonder why. Next mods he did was upgrade to 70mm tb and 3" ic pipes all the way around and he saw close to 60whp I believe. He was making near 650whp and now(well before he exploded his rocker arm) he was making 746awhp. If that doesn't speak for itself I don't know what does.

BreastFed made the same power, but at 2 psi less boost when he switched from 2.5" to 3" charge piping on his gt40R setup:
