GT30r issue
I have a GT3082r. I put some oil in the center cartridge and put it in the position where it would run and just spun the wheel by hand. I found that there was some oil on the compressor wheel and there were a few drops dropping out where the intercooler pipe connects to the compressor housing. There was no pressure, it was just some oil sitting in the cartridge. I assume bad oil seal, but I know a cartridge can't be rebuilt, but can a seal be replaced? There's not any shaft play. Or am I just out of luck?
If you're saying that you're finding slight amount of oil in the compressor housing and the car wasn't run, did you stand the turbo on its compressor side vertically? If so, nothing to worry about, as the sealing ring allows a little bit to go through. its when its under pressure, that's when the sealing ring expands and seals up.
If what your describing is oil in the compressor housing as the car has been running, that means you have a crankcase issue, and need a proper catch can.
But no, you can't replace a sealing ring on a GT-R series turbocharger.

Well its a used turbo and I haven't put it on yet. I was making sure that there wasn't any oil leaking before I put it on.
I put oil in the turbo, turned it like it was in use, and spun the shaft for about 5 minutes.

The pics might be overkill, but I just want to make sure that either the seals are bad or it's just me being too worried about it before I use it or get rid of it. Thanks.

Doesn't seem like the worse thing in the world. It has to oil pressure PASSED the ring seal in order for it to be damaged. Keep it horizontal, try it on, make sure you're using the correct .030" restrictor on the oil feed, and give it a shot.
Yes I made sure to take it off while it was horizontal.
And this is the restrictor I have. It's tiny. Is it the right one? Should I just order another one?

so let me get this straight, you are saying this turbo is acceptable to run like this? have you personally ever ran a turbo like this on a motor or in your car before? are 100% certain this will not effect the motor/turbo in any way, shape, or form??
(This is also in the PM I responded to)
I personally wouldn't have bought the turbo in the first place due to the mismatch of the wheel configuration that the GT3082R gave. Considering I don't know its full previous treatment, its not in my hands, I don't know if it was upside down for any length of time, There are a lot of variables to consider when seeing if thing really works, that can't be answered by pictures, no matter how good they are. I'll be honest, I'd have my doubts about this particular unit, (obviously so do you since you keep bringing this up,) but I have run some turbos like this before. It's not preferrable, but when it was needed I did, and it turned out ok. I don't know about this particular unit.
Sounds like you have some doubts, and for the price being asked, I don't blame you. Listen to your gut... Your spidey sense is tingling for a reason. If there is doubt, then don't buy it, and look for alternatives.
