Default Greddy turbo kits..

I was just checking out the greddy turbo kits and it appears they do not come with an intercooler... is it SAFE to run this kit without an intercooler?

Yes you can run it without an IC, but I would not. An IC lowers intake temps and helps your motor out in the long run. Also, the Greddy kit doesnt come with a BOV.

Agreed, you can run without an intercooler, but I would not recommend it. I ran for about 5-6 months without one during HOT summers at 5.5 psi. Heat soak was a major problem, absolutely no power, horrendous lag, etc.

i ran my greedy at 6.5psi w/o ic for a couple of months in the summer (90') its ok, but just becarefull. get a blow off valve first, it's cheeper, and protects the turbo.

I think there is an optional kit, that has an intercooler and BOV, it's worth it.

Not sure about that BOV phiz. I know they offer one, but I don't think they package the BOV and the IC as an optional kit.

Well, I bought a hatchback with a turbo kit installed, and the guy said repeatedly it was "stock" and it has a greddy intercooler and greddy BOV, so I dunno....
But I'm too lazy to search for it online, and also the fitment of the kit looks stock...

haha. you believe a person trying to sell you a car?!?!?

No greddy does not sell the BOV and IC as a package, you can buy them seperate. With the IC and BOV the kit is NO LONGER carb exempt.

Yup, the IC kit does come with charge piping to make the IC fit, but Greddy does not sell them as a kit with the BOV.

Assuming you did go with the intercoolor and were no longer CARB exempt, couldn't you tune it well enough so that it would pass smog assuming the technician doesn't notice the intercooler and other goodies?

you don't have to get the greddy intercooler...you can get other intercoolers for cheap. For example used intercoolers...or custom intercoolers...I just picked mine up from Tyrus at http://www.johnnyracecar.com for 250 shipped. As for piping you can go custom as well for half the price and it still be the same.

pics of my intercooler:

This intercooler is used by many people on honda-tech and are very satisfied. This would be a very good intercooler for a simple turbo setup.

I don't see how a BOV can be ricey? If it works, it works! I loved my TurboXS Type S BOV. Sounded like the stereotypical BOV--just a little "PSSSsshh." I've heard their RFL on a WRX, and that **** is LOUD. A definite scare-people-and-wake-up-the-neighbors blow-off valve.

How does the RFL sound? I've always heard they were really loud..but are they highpitched whistles like the greddy type S?

When I heard it on the WRX, it was Really ******* Loud. Sounded like a high-pitched sigh and, of course, EXTREMELY loud. I can't really put the sound into words; it wasn't exactly a sigh, maybe more like someone breathing really hard? I dunno. I think I'd get annoyed by its loudness after a week.
