Default golden eagle sleeve question...

since you can have a 2 litre by oversizing a 1.8 litre , the 1.6 oversize at 84.5 mm will be what?? a 1800 cc???

and what are the price to do that? (sleeving a block!)

thanks!

1.6 84.5 bore -> 1.8 liter.
1.8 84.5 bore -> 2.0 liter.

I think the sleeves cost $750.

I figure I'll ask my question here as well.

Is my thinking correct? I buy a bare block (so I don't have to deal with my car being out of commission for a month), send it to GE with the pistons of my choice and have them bore and hone it. I get it back and then I can just swap it with my block then sell my block. Am I getting anything wrong?

Don't forget- bore/hone is extra and they charge a very special $18.50 in tax on top of the $750 regardless of what state.

i heard that an 85.4mm bore on a B series motor with GE sleeves leaves a VERY THIN amount of sleeve left. and that its very dangerous. has anyone with 84.5mm bore measured their sleeves?

I have 5 blocks here locally with a 84.5mm bore, there is still a good amount of sleeve left. They pressure test every block up to 65 psi, I mean, damn, who is going to run that much boost? If anyone is interested, I am hosting a groupbuy on these sleeves.

Wait how to the pressure test the block to 65psi? I mean obviously they should be able to withstand 65psi of pressure... but what about 65psi of boost & fuel adding to in-use cylinder pressures?? What /actual/ pressure do they test to?

my friend just sent his block off to GEM to have it sleeved, bored, and honed to 86mm. This is of coarse for all motor, but will there be any problems with the sleeves being so thin? GEM told him it should be alright.

dustin their website says 65psi static.

as you know, detonation can cause local pressure spikes of several thousand psi though.

some reputable people have advised me against 84.5mm being that there is no 'meat' left to clean up the cylinder bores in case they need it or another person warned of cracking, claiming the sleeves are paper thin at that bore.

but if people are going 86mm, there is either at least 1.5mm there to remove or they are going with larger diameter sleeves.

84.5 mm bore (Golden Eagle sleeves) are VERY strong. Remember, these sleeves are MUCH, MUCH stronger than stock sleeves.

The only side effect to a 84.5 mm bore is ... you can only overbore once more (85 mm).

But, I doubt you'll crack the Golden Eagle sleeves on a street car.

65psi static? Heh, my compression tester shows 230psi static on stock sleeves

Maybe they're just trying to convince you that the sleeve-holding cement won't leak?

I can't imagine that they are touting that number as the amount of boost you can run, everyone must be confused.

you can overbore over 85mm, just not recommended for forced induction.
i think i've heard them say up to 87 (on n/a)

thanks guys. still trying to locate the source of this misinformation.

*edit: from Golden Eagle website: "Each block is pressure tested at 65 psi to insure no coolant leaks"

they arent intentionally misleading people.

they aren't testing boost pressure. what they are testing is the cooling system. the have a plate thats machined to the block surface which is secured by head bolts. they pressurize the cooling jackets to 65 psi to assure that there are no water leaks coming from the sleeves.

I would be interested. Are you selling blocks that are already sleeved? or are you just holding a GB for GE sleeves to send out our own blocks? How much? when does the GB start? thanks

This is a GB for you to get your block done. I didn't want to miss lead anyone, but I was refering to the letter I got from Golden Eagle when my sleeving was done. They will not warranty a block that has been boosted past 65 psi. Yes, all motor applications can go a little larger on the bore, but one thing you will get into is relief in the bottom of the block. When I went to 90 mm on my 2.2. They had to actually bore the block so I wouldn't have the piston slapping the block. I am pretty sure if you go over 84.5 mm on a b-series you will be looking at the same thing. If you guys want, I can post some pics and you can decide for yourself if you think there isn't enough "meat" left.

Do they have any suggestions on what size to go to for the Prelude engine? You went 3mm over stock right? I was thinking of going 89mm and useing Wiseco pistons. What pistons are you using?

Where do you guys recommend buying a spare block, I think I"m gonna buy one for my 01 GSR then send it to golen eagle and just swap it in my car when it come back. I can't be without a car for a month or so! What is a good price to pay for one, I really have no idea?
