Garrett GT Bearing Housing - Water Cooling and how it works
This is new on Garrett's Public aftermarket website, but I thought it would be great for H-Ters to access this information. This white paper is in plain english so there should be no excuse as to why one can't read this.
This white paper also addresses some rumors and myths about how the water lines are to be run, whether or not to use water lines (there have been threads in recent years as to the necessity of running water lines in the GT-R series turbochargers, as some shops choose not to use them for their own testing purposes, and this use gets spilled over onto forums that people blindly follow and wind up destroying their turbochargers)
This information DOES NOT address the use of ceramic ball-bearing center sections, air-cooled turbochargers from other companies, or any recommendations as to whether or not ALL turbochargers make more power with the lines or not. I'm attempting to bring some tech back into Honda-Tech, so this is just more information for the masses; take it or leave it.
This information is addressed specifically for the GT-R ball-bearing cartridge turbos, but as you know there are lots of turbochargers out there that have the ability to utilize optional water cooling in a journal bearing package. (Only a few cartridge types offer this). This is different than with the GT-R series which is addressed, that must run water cooling jackets in order to retain any warranties or utilize the turbocharger effectively. For those that road race or get into high endurance racing, this phenomenon is the reason why I personally have felt that Ball-bearing / water cooled cartidges are a must. There is nothing that chemically disapates heat better than "water" (I include distilled water as well as an ethyl glycol mix -"coolant"). Drag racing.. not so necessary, but nice to have.
You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader in order view this file, but keep it for yourself. Its information that can only help. Hopefully, this can be made a "sticky".

Thanks Shodan. Until recently I hadn't been on here (in a few years) and I must say there is quite a difference from what used to be.
Good to see some 'tech' rather than the same questions asked 50 million times.
Oh and to add to this, if the garrett turbo 101 lessons aren't already linked to in the forced induction section, they should be.

good info....ive always thought about running a 2nd closed loop cooling system for just the turbo with a electric pump + timer that continues to run for a few minutes after the car is shutoff to bring the temps back down.

Is there an image set or could we make an image set of the proper place to install these coolant lines?
I know it has been said many times where they go but if we could get it in this thread, maybe with some good images for different motors, this topic would be better covered in this one thread and a search would yield results.
Searching for this brings up mostly threads telling you to search...

If you have a particular engine profile that you'd like to consider, that would be more beneficial for you, then to try and go through the countless images and guesses as to how this is run. For hondas, that should be a separate thread about how to run water lines. This was just an informative white paper about why they should be run and its benefits.
