thanks for your help. im sure my motor is fine because i shut it down within 20 seconds of hearing the noise and there is no teeth gone on the belt. the cams were still in the correct position and they dont seem to have slipped a tooth. but im worried that the crank gear may have slipped. i just ordered a harmonic balancer tool to take it off since i have rented it 3 times in the past year and im prolly gonna need it again down the road. where can i purchase a good compression tester? can i just go to pepboys to buy one or is there a specific company i should buy one from? i had my buddy do it before but he is in kansas for school till december.

well i just watched a video of how to do a compression test on an b series motor and the guy in the video said to let the car warm up. do i have to do this cause say i did bend a valve slightly, wouldnt i not want to run the motor long enough to warm it up. can i just do it cold and crank the motor with the harmonic balancer bolt? like put a 19mm on the bolt and just turn the motor to get my reading? i kniow this is a fi thread but you seem to know your **** so im asking you for your help with this.

I know a decent amount in the turbo world, but honestly, I have my technician down the street from me, so I learn more from him than anything. YOu don't really need the car warmed up to do a compression test, just disable the fuel pump fuse, and attach it to the sparkplug in each cylinder. have a friend crank the engine over with the accelerator all the way down for about 15 seconds and watch the guage. if it doesn't go any higher after that 15 seconds, that's about your compression reading. you can get these at pep boys.

the guy in the video said to crank the motor 5 times in 5 sec intervals. and he also said that there shouldnt be more than a 10% diff between cyliders. is this correct. also you you know if the obd1 Ls water pump has the same amount of teeth as the gsr or b18 water pump and if it is diff would it be better to go to a pump with more teeth. i know they are all the same fitment but would having more teeth be benificial when going to a turbo setup and i can maybe use it later when i do do my b20v cause i know they suggest a gsr waterpump. or would it not work cause of having an Ls timing belt and it maybe being a diff length.

GSR has 22 Teeth. LS has 19 teeth. You need to match the timing belt you have to its matching water pump. They are not all the same fitment.. You must match Now.

If you want go by the "guy in the video" (i'm curious as to whom you're using as a guide) then give it a try. 10% is correct.

If you want to go through an entire guide. don't do ask this step by step. check this out.

Have confidence in yourself, and when it comes to turbo time, THEN call me. Remember, this is a Forced Induction forum. There's a separate engine build forum for other questions like this.
