Default fuel pressure

ok so last night i finally got my b&m fuel pressure gauge set, and whe i hooked it up it tells me that i only have 5-10 psi with the vaccum source disconnected??? whats wrong??
so then i hook up my b&m frp, and i turn the fuel pressure up to 30-35 and it gets so rich that it wont even rev up. blck smoke rolling out of the back of the car.
so what gives?? i turn it back down to 5-10psi and everything works great, boosted it with this pressure also and no detonation, and it reads rich on the air/fuel gauge at wot?
thanks
brian
