Flywheel + Turbo..whats a good combo?
Whats up everyone. I have my engine pulled out right now for a FI buildup. Gathering information on internal engine mod for boost is easy I am am stick with what has been shown to work resleeved, forge pistons rods etc. I would like know if anyone knows with actually experience on any turbo tranny, not much opionion, on how light is to light for a flywheel on a B18B LS tranny which is about to go turbo. I have the ACT extreme clutch with full face organic street disc right now. I was inspecting my Flywheel, figure instead of getting it resurfaced, better off getting something lighter, but not to familiar with this subject. I have search many forums on this subject, still looking for a good consensus. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks

im also still looking for a good reccomendation on a turbo flywheel setup. i know the major manufactures that make good flywheels (jun fidanza clutchmasters) but none of them will give me a straight answer if one of those will take 350lb of torque. thanks

Two good flywheels are the Toda chromoly (9 or so lbs), and Spoon flywheel (about 9.2 or something)....
I wouldn't go much lighter than that for a turbo car, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure the ideal flywheel weight should be between 9-12 lbs so that the RPMs don't fall too fast, but you still get the benefits of a quickly revving motor.

I never understood this whole argument. If they fall faster, so what? They rise faster too. But that's just off the top of my head. I really dig my Clutch Masters flywheel.

im not very smart but ill try and explain a little
its about rotational mass i think
the less the flywheel weighs the less energy the engine has to use to turn it, so that means more power for wheels. kinda
i mean it dosent like give you horse power but it does make your car faster.
hope i explained that right

Stock flywheel all day long. Our race car uses it as do most others. We exploded a CM and that ended up causing us some serious bad news.
stock stock stock all day every day. No need for less weight. The turbos like the heavy flywheels as they load the turbo up a bit. spend the money on other stuff, theres plenty of it.

Re: Flywheel + Turbo..whats a good combo? (KAMiN)
i ran with a 6.5lbs fidanza flywheel which is basically the CM flywheel...
let's just say that your car get's to redline in a jippy...
the stock ITR flywheel is noticeably different than the stock gsr flywheel...
and does not create the super lightness of the aluminum flywheels...

Re: Flywheel + Turbo..whats a good combo? (KAMiN)
I would highly reccommend you go with a stock type flywheel. It is good over 400+ ftllbs of torque. I dynoed with stock flywheel and hit 424ftlbs of torque with no problems. The only reason i dont have a stock flyhweel now is that i went with a carbon clutch from tilton which requires a special flywheel which is ligther than stock.

Re: Flywheel + Turbo..whats a good combo? (b18bturbo)
So the clutch masters 9lbs aluminum flywheel wouldnt be a great idea?. The way I am building up the motor, it should be able to handle 20psi respectivly with the proper fuel and timing. I mean someone said the CM flywheel they used exploded , which doesnt sound to good. Whats the weight of a ITR flywheel? THanks guys

Re: Flywheel + Turbo..whats a good combo? (KAMiN)
So what I am getting from this post that stock one is good, including the ITR flywheel, and anything lighter, especially made out of aluminum is not good for a turbo setup? Thanks
