Default first engine build

Hey guys, ive been reading and researching thread after thread here on HT for the past few months and now ive come to the point where i feel confident to begin an engine build.I want to build a reliable 400-500hp LS-turbo dd/occasional drag strip car.I know its been covered a million times but im not asking how to build it,i just need some guidance along the way and your guys input on what will and will not work.

This is going to be a very slow build. As of right now i have a 99 LS head that i plan on taking to the machine shop.I have everything out of the head.It is stained with burnt oil and id like to clean it up to thoroughly inspect it for wear and cracks...Any suggestions on how to clean it up?The valve guides seem fine theres no play or wobble in them should i upgrade them or will they be fine for my power goal?

Here are my plans for the head-any input appreciated
-full port & polish
-3 angle valve job
-(?) cam gears
-Crower stage 2 turbo cams
-Crower dual valve springs & titanium retainers
-Crower ss 31.5mm intake valves (+.5mm)
-Crower ss 28mm exhaust valves (standard)
-IL4 bronze valve guides.... or ?
-RC 1000cc injectors
-Edelbrock Victor X im
-70mm throttle body
-AEM fuel rail
-Hondata intake manifold gasket
-multi layer cosmetic head gasket
-cam seal

it sounds good so far just don't rush and make sure to use proper torque spec for your bolts.

You should have the machine shop clean the head. Thats not something you can do properly at your house. Any gunk that might get left in the oil passages will come out after you reassemble it and destroy your new engine. You should have the guides checked and serviced if necessary by the machine shop. The 'wobble test' is inaccurate and won't tell you anything. If your guide clearance is excessive the seals will be useless in keeping oil out.

Also, you say you plan on installing larger valves. Do you plan on having larger seats installed too, along with the port work necessary to make that mod worthwhile?

thx..ok ill have the machine shop clean the head and check it out and make sure its ok. Good point on the larger seats i didnt think of that...do you think it would be worth installing larger intake valves or would the stock size be sufficent? I mean its just .5mm...dosent seem like much.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother on your first build. Who told you this was a good idea anyway? Its a lot of work for very little gain. You would be better off having the head ported with the stock valve size and will probably see better flow gains anyway. By installing larger valve seats you risk altering the venturi under the valve seat which is very important for airflow past the valve.

No one really told me to do it that way, just usualy when i see high horsepower builds most of the time they use larger valves.Sounds good to me...i have no problem saving some $$

I did come cutting on the cam gear cover and painted it with some VHT wrinkle paint.
