Default Engine Noise: Pistons or valvetrain?

I finally got my car together and running, however there is noise coming from the engine bay. It sounds like a light ticking/knocking sound when the car is idling. When it first starts up, it is a little louder than if has been running for a few minutes, but not by much at all. You can still hear it inside the car when idling at a stoplight. I thought maybe the valve lash might need to be adjusted, so I did that today and the sound is still there. The car has a built D16Y8 including Crane valvesprings and titanium retainers as well as SRP pistons. I called Crane and they said that they had not heard of anyone having an issue with a noisy valvetrain. Anyone have a clue?

ticking and knocking are a world apart. i don't know if anyone can help you without actually hearing it themselves. take it to a reputable shop and ask for them to diagnose it.

The SRP pistons are where you are hearing the noise. I have the same problem. The pistons are a little loose. If the stock bore is what you are running, then the SRP pistons are smaller by a few thousandths. It wont hurt anything as long as you dont push it until it is warmed up. Loose is actually better for power.

I'll try and get a video up tomorrow maybe, its somewhere packed up with all my **** from school. I listened to the engine through the valve cover with a beer bottle (ghetto, but you can hear things really well) and the louder tick/knock didn't sound like the valvetrain at all.

Do a valve adjustment...be sure ur timing is sync to stock settings...also it could be ur injectors ticking very loud as well

Valves were adjusted today, as I said in my first post. Timing is also sync'ed up, the car runs great, theres just some noise from the engine bay.

Injectors are RC550's, Peak/hold run through a resistor box. Are these known for being loud (or at least considerably louder than stock injectors)?

when you did the valve lash, did you do it with the motor cold or warm? did you go over them after you set it? it's such a pain in the *** but you have to check.

rather than taking a chance in a built motor, take it to a shop, serously, do you want to chance if there is something wrong ruining an expensive motor?

Taking it to a shop dosn't gaurantee anything.

Does the noise go away or lighten up when warm?

A local shop that is very well known in the V8 world built the bottom end.

Yes, it was done with the engine cold and I checked it again after I was done.

from my experience, shops well know to the V8 worl dont take into consideration that honda clearances are 10 thousandths of an inch, where most v8's are thousandths of an inch, so when they just "glance" at the clearance say .0016" they read it as 16 1,000ths when actually it is 16 10,000ths, 16 1,000ths = 160 10,000ths

I trust that the engine builder got the clearances correct as he has done work with Honda engines before, and wouldn't just "glance" at the clearances.

Driving to work today I did notice that the volume of the noise was consistent regardless of RPM or time running, though it did increase with speed.
