Re: How much louder are forged pistons than stock pistons? (b18bturbo)
thats weird cause my car sounds liek it has a little tick to it even after it warms up. you and hear it buch better on a cold start. I toulds like a valve to me but i checked them all out and the were in spec.... I cant hear it at all at highway speeds about i can hear it riding around town. Its kinda hard to explain. Would a lose rod cap make this noise? I figured that would be much louder. I personally put the engine together and I was there to see the mac.. hand fill the piston rings to fit. any ideas guys? It jsut really sounds like its at the top of the engine. thanks
Oh one time i had a valve rocker nut backoff and it sounds just like that. a lite ticking or knocking. thanks

I just had another guy look at it whos good with engine. and he said he cant hear anything out of the ordinary. But i still hear a little tap. I just dont want it to be a rod bearing or anything. I guess ill have to pull the rod caps of and check of any wierd wear. Just incase. anyone got any other ideas?

Re: How much louder are forged pistons than stock pistons? (BLK94RS)
hey man you could be right. but i just dont rember hearing it before i did the rebuild. But i think the injectors kinda tick and the the noise i hear is like a taping. I just sounds so much like too much valve lash. I just wanna make sure and find out. does anyone know what a loose rod cap would sound like? i figure that would be much louder than the noise i hear. thanks again

Putting forged pistons in a motor ... you're bound to get a little ticking. Many cars that I have heard had some 'abnormal sounding' ticking at idle even when fully warm. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it.

Same problem on my gsr. I bought the car with this ticking noise and it sounds like the same problem. I have JE pistons and eagle rods but it's just a constant ticking sound that doesn't get louder or softer. Of course, when I'm on the highway you can't hear it because of the thermal exhaust. I'm still trying to find someone to work on the motor to find out what the ticking sound is though.

But i thinkim gonna go with dustin on this and just leave it alone.. thanks for the coments guys. the weird thing is if i ask people to listen to it that know about motors they say they cant hear anything thats out of the ordinary, but if people who dont know crap here my car there like whats that ticking. crazy huh.

With my experience, JE pistons chatter a little bit, but only a couple of minutes when the motor is cold. After that, it's just like stock.
SRP pistons are quiet right out of the box. I have helped build a few and that's what I saw.

Re: How much louder are forged pistons than stock pistons? (shamoo)
My stock GSR motor makes ticking noises anyway and there is nothing wrong with it. Our motors are just loud, and putting forged pistons in them doesn't help...

Anyone coat the piston skirts/sides? Molybdnum??
And who does that shiny golden piston top coating/treatment?
Every little bit helps, no.

Just for the sake of things somebody did post up a sound file of piston slap in a gsr motor a while back when a similar topic was brought up, I wish I would have saved it thou. Oh well...
