engine build from hell

tons of white smoke and oil everywhere=turbo.
take the turbo out and look at the turbine side. check your ic piping. is there oil?? i pulled like 2qrts out of the second car. and half a qrt. on the first car.</TD></TR></TABLE>im not 100% sure but i thought he said there was no charge piping on the car which kind of eliminates the turbo from being the culprit

yes i disconected the turbo piping because i know for a fact the turbo needs to be rebuilt. there is a large amount of slop and play in the turbo. so to eliminate it as a possibility i kept the intake disconected from the pressure side of the turbo. i will bet the turbo is contributing some to the smoke. however, since the oil is getting into the combustion chamber, well before the exhaust system, the turbo is a moot point.
haha, the studs are missing from the removal of the head. ARP bolts like to stick to the studs from time to time. those three extracted the entire studs when i removed the head.
i ordered a nice valve spring compressor and will take a look at the valve seals close up whenever it arives. i'm going to pull the block sunday and get it back on an engine stand.
since the general consensuses is that the rings are to blame i will ask which are the best rings to go with. since i recomended/installed these ring i am to blame and will replace them at my own expence. i'm not a cheapscate i want the best rings for this i can get. arias? oem honda? or anything else?
i thank you all for your help

just an fyi al, when the motor was built earl had some problems with the arias rings binding up a little.. He ended up ordering some cp rings for it and they solved the problem..

As stated above, there is oil in the combustion chambers, so this rules out the turbo being the problem. The turbo could be adding to the problem if there were problems with its seals, but the majority of the smoke must be comming from the rings. Also, that is alot of smoke for it to be valve seals.

hey i don't know if i miss this as i read the whole thread but here it goes anyways.
i don't know about the reliability of the total seal rings, my friend is running then in his 450hp ls/vtec hatch and its running strong. but anyways, this what i do when i put new rings on any motor: after i build up the oil pressure, i put a drop of oil in the cylinder, start the car and rev it up at about 2000 rpms the purpose of this is to make the rings seat so the oil seal have the proper sealing, run it until the smoke goes away. however as far as i know this has to be done at start up right after you crank it to build up the oil pressure otherwise the rings will not seat properly.
i hope that helps man!!!

I remember building that motor. We have seen issues with Arias bottom rings in the same fashion many times. Every time we opted to use a different ring then what Arias provided. Fixed the problem. The tension was WAAAY too much!

update:
i talked to laskey racing today and decided to pull the pistons out with a lil help from the original owner; thank you chad
i am sure i'm preaching to the choir
LASKEY Racking is THE SHOP!!!!!
everytime i have called them they have been very imformative and fun to talk to besides.
anyway, i'll be sending these things off to laskey this week. he'll be custom fitting a set of rings to these pistons
and as a the rings' parting shot, the 2nd ring (the gapless one) on piston 4 split in half when i started to remove it. i had barely even applied any pressure to it too. guess its a good thing it came out, i'd havte to have it break while operating

+1
Ive tried building 2 B series motors with total seal rings and both were a total failure. I know of a number of other people who have had the same problem with those rings

I do beleive I was the first person that even mentioned the rings being an issue. Thus I will gladly take my cut of that bet. lol.

well this build has finally come to a close.
Laskey was right, the rings were the culprits. so it's time to officially call in those bets!
after the install of the Laskey's custom CP rings everything is great. the owner even replaced his oil leaking, blown out turbo while we were waiting on the new rings to come in. so now the car doesn't smoke, doesn't leak oil like crazy either. its scheduled to get tuned shortly so all is well.
thanks to all the help and many thanks to Laskey Racing

congrats on getting the problem solved and posting what it was. I read this thread a few months back and wondered if it was fixed.
