Default EGT Temps

ok on a turbo honda what are the common EGT temps? How hot can it get?
How hot can a Exhaust manifold get?
when does stuff start to melt?
I wanna find out when because im trying to get my exhuast manifold, exhuast housing coated and im just trying to find the coat i would like.
I know jet-hot has a 2000coating and thats to about 2500degress but i dont think i need anything like that.

Thanks in advice.

Just go with a 2000 degree coating.

yeah if your egt's get to 2,000 degrees you're motor will be melted so don't worry you prob. won't exceed mid 1400's ona boosted car.

My EGT probe is mounted on the downpipe right after the turbo. I have never seen it go past 1400.

mine is on #3(the hot cyl) and is about .75" from the head and i like to see 1450 going through the traps. 2000 deg will be fine.

so i should run the jet-hot 2000coating?
ive found a place local that coats but its about 1800degress tho.

now if i was to run 13psi would my egt even get that high with 10.5:1compression?
i would most likly run 25psi at the track.

That doesn't seem like a very good place to take an accurate temperature reading. I was told this was ideal:

Yeah, you'll probably see around 1600*F peak in the exhaust manifold.

Note the key words: Probably, around, peak.

I just followed the directions that came with the autometer guage. Plus, if it were mounted in the exhaust manifold and the probe broke and snapped off for any reason it could damage the turbo.

ok. Yeha i know the EGT probe should be at Cly3.
ok Arounf 1600 is still decent. The coating like i said is about 1800degress so its still holding up.

I think that running 1500-1600 degrees would be very dangerous for pump gas. I don't think you will be exceeding 1450 degrees. So the 1800 degree coating should be fine.

Why is a certain temperature dangerous? Basing engine safety on EGT is so stupid.

You can run really conservative timing advance (very safe) and it will jack your EGT's way up. Then if you advance the timing more (more dangerous), your EGT's will go down.

That's not helpful at all.

so what would you say EGT is a good measure of?

It does a great job telling you what the temperature of the gasses leaving your motor are.

Stuff starts to emtl when bad things happen, there is no certain EGT where parts will melt.

I was trying to get your opinion on why you think an EGT guage is important. Since you do not believe that it is an indicator of engine safety, what do you think EGT's indicate?

Told told you already, I think EGT's indicate the averge kinetic eneregy (temperature) of the exhaust molecules leaving the motor.

It's a moderately decent tuning reference, but only if you have the rest of the proper equipment (wideband, possibly knock detection, etc).

It can NOT be used by itself.

My egt crusing on the highway in 5th at about 80 with a gsr tranny is around 650-700 degrees C. When I am on it hard the hottest I ever hit was 800 degrees C. Mine is mounted on my manifold in the #3 cylinder.

mine is usually like 1200 or so on the highway just cruising. and on the streets maybe like 800-1000

I think your guage is working fine.
I know mine hits 1600 quite often, but I'm not worried at all since everytime I check the plugs, they look awesome, and every few months when I tear down the motor, the internals look good.

I hit 800 at idle, up to around 1200 at part throttle, and peak at about 1600 at WOT in the 1/4 mile.
