Default Downpipe too Close to Alternator???

From looking at the pic. Does it too close to the altnator? The tech guy said the reason my alt. is going bad, is because the downpipe is giving off 300F temp to the altnator.

Can I wrap around my downpipe with some thermal warp or heat wrap / ???

You can fabricate a heatsheild for the alternator

You think 1 of those (or more) should do the trick??? I am thinking about wraping the whole downpipe.

The DP in my AllTrac is about five times further away than that, but Toyota still put a heat shield on the alternator went so far as to add a small scoop on the hood to duct cooling air towards it.

I think their reasoning was something along the lines of retaining that whole Toyota reliability image... I can't recall, though.

That's a good way to rot your downpipe. How about an actual heat shield? Some 22 gauge mild steel bent up and held a half inch from the DP would work wonders.

Heat wrap works extremely well to reduce under hood temps and keep the heat in the pipes. You won't even need a heat shield if you properly wrap the DP.

Id do both, if you have a vice, drill, hammer and a small sheet of metal you can easily bang out a heatshield, but thermal wrap is cheap ****, but Ive read many things about it causing SS to erode and cause cracking and such

^^Exactly!! Leave the pipe alone, and just make a shield for the alt.

Mines about that close (or closer) and caught in a downpipe/dump tube sammich. I just wrapped the segment that runs next to it with wrap. No problems yet... *crosses fingers*

I'd go with the shield...too many worries I've heard of with wrapping exhaust members.

Yeah, I've *heard* stuff too, just never seen or witnessed it myself. Either way, I spent about $50 at most on my downpipe and about 2 hours or so cutting/fitting/welding - so no biggy to me.
