Does a turbo really silence your exhaust note?

Does a turbo really silence your exhaust note?
Just wondering if it silences the exhaust a considerable amount. I would suppose that would also only be while under boost, correct? If anyone has some feedback for me, let me know. Thanks.

Re: Does a turbo really silence your exhaust note? (Acura97GSR)
The turbo does quiet down your exhaust substantially under all conditions, because no matter what, your exhaust is routed through the exhaust turbine which smooths out the exhaust gas expansion that is creating much of the noise you hear from your tailpipe. Cruising on the highway is much nicer with a turbo.

I have an rsr now on my gsr. It is the original canister style rsr, not the new n1 version. The exhaust is already quiet, so I guess it will be even quieter once I install a turbo. Which rsr do you have? And also, what about accelerating? Does the turbo also silence the exhaust? Thanks for your help.

I had the old RSR black with 70 degree angle tip. Yes, even under acceleration the exhaust was not loud - the BOV, wastegate and turbo whine were louder than the exhaust. Now with the Thermal Exhaust the wastegate, BOV and turbo whine are less noticeable due to the increase in exhaust noise from the 3" piping.

No, since the SC does not come anywhere near your exhaust piping it should have no effect on exhaust noise; it will certainly change your intake note though.

LEON, how long has your gsr been turboed? Have you had any reliability issues to deal with during the course of time that it has been installed? Thanks alot for your time.

I have had the turbo on the car now for ~ 4 months (~ 5,000 miles). A relatively short time, but from day one I have had no reliability issues, no issues at all (knock on wood ).

that is what i heard as well, that the turbo lowers the tone of the exhaust. but, my car with a tanabe racing medallion with custom 3.00" piping, turbocharged, is loud as hell. louder now than before. but, i run my car w/o a cat. would this be the cause of the increase in noise?

yea, it is very very quiet I suppose. I have the N1 exhaust and when it was NA, it was like breaking sound barrier. But now with the turbo, it sounds more like the greddy SP's when it was brand new. ken

The Apexi N1 comes in two sizes: 60mm (2.36") and 80mm (3.15"). Obviously the 80mm is the one to chose when going turbo.

i thought that the 80mm is only the muffler and not the full catback. i have a 96 integra ls and i thought that they only made the 60mm catback for it.

I have a freind who had a SC'd Si with a 3" Thermal, when he got in my other freind's car with a GReddy kit and a Thermal he couldnt believe it was the same exhasut. He said that if his car had been that quiet he probably would have kept it.
I am kind of glad i never installed my Thermal when i had my SC. I probably would have hated it, but I think it is going to sound nice with my Drag. Not to mention the "infamous Arturbo 3" downpipe". lol

Rob92SC, if there is such a thing as a full 80mm exhaust for the Integra from anyone, show us the way... I'm sure that most of us would buy one...
