sounds like rod knock from bad bearings, but it usually gets louder when you rev, but it did not.

yup sounds like input shaft bearing. I had the same problem. When we took the tranny apart the ***** all fell out of the bearing

Sounds like my car. I replaced the pilot bearing and it didn't help. I didn't want to fart around with the tranny, so I deal with it.

How hard is it to replace said "input shaft" bearing?

pretty hard you have to take out the tranny, unbolt the clutch housing from it, remove the gears and then replace the input shaft bearing. all this for a $30 part. im most likely going to buy a new transmission to save myself the hassle since i can get one for only like $200-300.

pull the engine? Didn't you see he just figured out its the tranny?

As for pulling the tranny apart it really isn't all that hard. My friend helped me pull mine apart when mine broke and the only hard thing was getting the gears all lined up back in there, but it only took probably 20-30 minutes to replace the bearing after the tranny was out.
