Default Does Precision Make a Journal Bearing GT30R?

Seems like something I might be interested in at some point, but I haven't ever seen such a thing mentioned. Kind of a slightly littler brother of the SC61 I guess. . .

The GT-R series is designed to have a complimentary effect between the bearing package and the wheel design. Even if you were to find a journal bearing version, it would not be as efficient as its BB CHRA counterpart because the dynamic of the turbo has changed. You could look at the Borg Warner S256/S258. That is a journal bearing turbo with the same potential as the GT30r. The price is about the same though...not sure why you're trying to avoid the BB CHRA...bearing package or price?

Kind of both. I just seem to have an aversion to the ball bearing CHRAs. They seem kind of fragile, and I don't like having to run water lines. Also, I like the basic concept of the SC61 with it's GT40 compressor wheel, and almost GT35r turbine wheel, but if mine was just a touch more responsive, I might like a tiny bit more. . . Don't know for sure, just curious mostly I guess.

it is kind of weird that they make a non ball bearing 35r but no version like that of the 30r

This is true, but don't forget that the GT series itself can have similar results as the GT-R series. Or some combination thereof. Not to shamelessly plug, but many people I've consulted have gone S256, or the Silver surfer to get similar affects as the GT30R without having to purchase that particular unit, because they don't want to have the ball-bearing setup.

I have made something similar to a GT30R journal bearing but it is for a subaru application. It's called "The Predator".

The non-ballbearing 35R, isn't the same as a GT35R. It uses the same GT40 compressor wheel, but the exhaust wheel is not the same as the GT35R at all. As Schister66 says, it is the wheel design PLUS that cartridge that makes them what they are.

The reason a non-ball-bearing 30R isn't done is because for the flow rate and characteristics (of even top end power) there are alternatives out there already (they just have to be assembled with the right components.)

Are any of them in the price range of an SC61?
