Default Does a cam gear effect detination?

Well that is my question....... I have a SOHC and I have a cam gear on it. And I want to advance the cam timing but does it cause detination?

depends how far you go, what octane your running etc etc

Is your car turbo? running what for management?

changing your cam timing will just move your powerband on a sohc. You may be thinking of ignition timing. Increasing that too much can cause detonation.

changing your cam timing will just change the powerband location

Well I knew that ingition timing would cause detination if you advanced it too much. But then I thought about cam timing and I hear that it lets more air in. Then I thought about the air fuel mix. Sooo I just wanted to make sure I could do it with out redoing hondata.

And for furture questions
I have a Sohc
93 octane
Turbo 10 psi t3/t4
and I want to advance it 3 degrees (AEM) Not sure if that is 6 degrees or 3. Some cam gears every notch is 2 degrees. And the cam should be custom.

trust me you don't want to advance it 3 degrees. Leave it where it is.

Actually I advanced it 3 degrees (that is where Bob Norwood had it when the motor was built) and it seems to have alot better low end and throttle response. Where the sohc's miss it. And I found out it is actually 6 degrees 1-3 ratio. But I'm not getting any signs of Detonation and I'm running 10psi

so you advanced the cam timing 3 degrees or the ingition timing? Unless you milled your head then you really shouldn't be advancing the cam timing. You are going to gain more low end, but just lose top end power. It just shifts your power curve.

You need to reset your ignition timing after changing the cam timing.

This might be a stupid ? but why Do I have to change my ingition timing?

And to answer your ? I changed my cam Timing a total of 6 degrees. I did notice I lost a little on the top because a M3 was pulling on me.

Bc your distributor controls your ignition and its based on your cam.

your cam timing changes the location of the power band in a SOHC, adavance it makes higher dynamic compression at low speeds, and retarding it allows the cylinder to be filled at just the right time at high rpms

Yea I have to see where I like it.....I'm going to try retarding it also when it warms up a little. I hate working on my car at anything below 40 degrees. Even though it's only 3 blots. LOL

Trust me it will be best for you to just set it in the middle. Maybe if you had an aftermarket cam then adjusting it would help, but with the stock cam its probably just going to hurt you.

remember, altering the cam timing on a honda motor also moves the ignition timing as well, it takes the cam and moves it in a different pick up position, remember the rotor is attached to the end of the cam so when you degree them you move the rotor too, thus altering ignition timing, unless you reset the dizzt timing.

most people see gains with cam movement simply because they move the cam and never reset timing. all the gains usually seen are from ignition timing.

if you reset dizzy timing after degreeing the cam THEN you will truley see results from cam movement ONLY
