Default didn't adjust timing before driving after supercharger install

okay so my friend and I did the unthinkable tonight.

We took his stock b16A and supercharged it with a JRSC and a hondata S300 ecu from Jackson racing.

Well everything went well with the install until we fired it up and drove it without changing the timing!

His engine was set at 18 BTDC before when he was running NA tuning.

I guess the supercharger instructions called for 7 degrees BTDC.

We must've drove around 5 km's up to 8000 RPM with the timing way out of wack.

Even at light load at 2000-3000 rpm we heard this weird ticking/ping noise that would come and go (which of course is the ecu retarding the timing).

Now it didn't knock but did ping at 2000-3000 rpm as described above.

The evening temps were very cool and he was running premium with octane boost (probably the saving grace here).

In any case we adjusted the timing to the recommended 7 degress but the car now seems like it lacks the wicked power that it had when set to 18 degrees timing.

Would we have damaged anything on his motor? We're not looking for power now b/c we need to tune the darned thing but I'm worried we may have mucked up the motor.

Also the engine b/c we changed the coolant had some air bubbles in the lines/head and it almost completely overheated in my driveway.

We obviously stopped the motor right away when I noticed the cooling fan running for more than 2 minutes.

I would say that it was past 3/4 of the way to "H" but I didn't actuall hit H and we quickly popped the rad cap off the rad to disappate the steam and refill with water/coolant mixture.

At what point does the head gasket die from overheat?

Thanks, we're new to forced induction so we would like some pointed if possible.

Thanks

7 degrees is WAY to low. You were close when you were running 18 deg. If your only running low boost I'd see how it acts with 15-16 deg. I doubt you damaged anything

If you have the Hondata and the correct basemap, you shouldn't need to retard the timing.

What's the rest of your setup? Injectors, fuel pump etc.

Also did you move the map sensor so it can read boost?

Ditto, the stock installation instructions from JR have you retard the timing when you are using the FMU, the Hondata should use the stock 16 degrees BTDC. And like above, is the MAP sensor moved?

Set it on stock timing...16degrees. It will be fine.. 7 is very low.

7 degrees is way 2 low, just create a new base map, making sure that ing timing is set to at least .75 per lb of boost....if ur worried about ur motor i suggest u perform a comp. test and leak down test. but i dout u hurt anything

Default Re: (dreadcivicturbo)

He's running 6psi of boost using premium fuel and his motor has good compression since it has hardly any mileage on it. Original owner, never abused.

He's using the hondata s300 ecu and he's running rc 440 injectors with 50 PSI of fuel pressure and stock fuel pump.

His idle is crap (stalls when he gets to a light)

In any case I will tune it back to stock timing.

Any other recommendations?
