Default Detonation? Backfire? What am I hearing?

Ok, i put my turbo kit and thermal exhaust in about a month ago now, and I've heard some noises that concern me. It cruises and accelerates well for a while, but if I drive it hard for a while, say 15 minutes of hard driving around on streets, I'll hear what sounds like increasingly loud pops when cruising. This is at low rpm and low throttle. I'll be lightly on the gas, then let go to coast for a moment. When I return back to the gas, I'll hear the pop sound. It's a single pop usually, but the harder I drive, the louder the pop will be. I can't tell exactly where it's coming from, but I can feel it through the seat. I don't believe it's coming from the engine.....but....who knows.

So FI people, I need some opinions on what this is, and how I should remedy it. I have a 98 LS integra with the basic DRAG kit installed + a 3" thermal exhaust. My ignition timing is stock. The fuel system is the secondary inline pump, and the Vortech (12:1?) FPR. The plugs are the NGK plugs which came with the kit.

well that could be a few things, but most likly its just a backfire, my car does that, even without the turbo......

since honda does the jackass thing of cutting all fuel when the throttle is closed to save gas mileage, you get a lean backfire at light throttle.

plus when you get on it you putting a bit more extra gas in the exhaust system so it will get louder....

my 2 cents

I'd check timing and fuel....you may be running really rich...i'd also check the gaps on your spark plugs.

Well said.. this all u need to know, for the most part its normal, Built road race cars sometimes shoot a 4 foot flame when they let up of the gas. The 3" DP doesn't make the pop any quieter.

I've gotten a CEL of the MAP sensor. It's not constant though, since if I reset it, the CEL takes about a week of driving to come back. Could this be a cause?

I agree with what has been said, and I know for a fact your running rich..ditch the rising rate and use a aeromotive 1:1 fpr and get a EMS or hondata..

Y an aeromotive?? How about keeping the stock fpr since its 1:1 and just getting a ems or hondata on that... Hondata is every poor mans dream... Or u can go with bigger injectors and doing the hack
