Default is this detonation?

the other night I was going home and decided to floor it to see how it felt(00 si greddy turbo, FMIC,5 psi) it was about 60 degrees car had been running for 5- minutes so it was full warmed up. I was in 3rd gear doing like 40, floored it. At about 7500 rpms I started hearing a noise like little tiny rocks hitting the underside of the car. I let off and tried it again, exact same noise. The next night same conditions I tried 1 last time and I didn't hear anything. to hear that noise I had my windows up and radio off and it was very faint. I am going to check the plugs this weekend but I would like to know if this is detonation, and if it is any clues on what could be causing it? using NGK Bkr7e's(not sure if the letters are right but their the common plugs everyone recommended for my setup) the injectors with the greddy kit and the blue box. As always I appreciate any and all replies, and yes I already did a search and found nothing useful on detonation.

That could be detonation. I decribe it as marbles bouncing around in the engine. Check the plugs imediately after hearing what possibly could be detonation. If you see colored specles on the plugs then try to figure out whats causing the detonation.

if I am not mistaken all black means the engine is running rich which isn't really a bad thing. if the black is wet as in oily then it is very bad.

You ever think it could of been just that. I know when i first went turbo every little thing i heard i became paranoid about. Also, with the greddy kit at 5psi you shouldn't have any detonation at all. I had it on my old motor at 8psi and didn't get detonation and that was with the greddy blue box and 93 octane.

it could be, but I know that I don't hear much road debris hitting my car till i'm getting on it and my car doesn't detonate. It was just a guess.

well I will see when I check the plugs this weekend, hopefully it's somthing else making the noise. I know the inner cv boot is leaking and spraying the grease all over, but I doubt it would sound like that.

Doesn't unleaded fuel always burn black?

well your plugs should really be black from a normal engine that isn't running rich. their obviosuly not going to be shiny clean, but they shouldn't be jet black either.

My timing hasn't been adjusted, and on a side note the temperature that I was hearing this at was alot cooler than it normally is down here, and I never noticed it before.

I have the EXACT same problem, but I'm running stock timing. Greddy kit, blue box, stock everything (pump, injectors, timing, clutch, fuel pressure, etc.) @ 7 psi. I'm going to retard it 2 deg. at the dist. and get some 7 series plugs vs. the 6 series I have now. Hopefully that will fix it.

Have you tried any of the suggestions given yet? Sounds like it is detonation to me. Colder air has more oxygen so if your fuel is based solely off boost pressure it will lean out more the colder the air. Try retarding the distrubuter 1 or 2 degrees, make sure your plugs are gapped right around .030".....

actually I think my plugs are gapped at about 28 going by what everyone said before when I asked I took the average. I am going to check them sometime this weekend.

What you are describing is called "pinging".
And yes, it is mild detonation.

My car did the same, retarded a fe degrees and its gone.

Plugs showed barely and signs.
I even put them under a microscope.

You should not own a turbo vehicle if you do not know how to adjust timing.

making a statement like that is like saying you shouldn't drive a car unless you know how to rebuild the engine. it was a simple question because it's not something that everyone does on a daily basis. I appreciated the advice you gave at first but your last post makes you seem like an ***. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask incase someone felt like quickly telling me before I find out for my self, noone knows everything before hand.

loosen the bolts for the dist. just enought for the distributor to move. you need a timing light. have the car runing point the light at the timing marks and you'll get a reading on the gun. if you turn the dist. towards the front of the car thats retarding the timing if you turn the dist. toward the fire wall then you are advancing the timing.

A timing light costs pretty cheap....

But an adjustable timing light goes from 70-and up. Of course there are different brands thats why theres different prices.
