Ok so I put JE pistons and eagle rods in, when im at idle the car sounds like a deisel truck. Why? Is it pistons slap? Will it ever go away? The car sounds and runs awsome. Standing outside the car it sounds normal but when sitting in it, the slap sound i guess, is really noticable. Is this noraml with foraged pistons? It goes away while im driving.
really? I thought all forged pistons are supposed to have a lot more slap than cast stock pistons until they are warmed up
I got my car started today finally and it sounded like a diesel

Precisely...mine sounds like a diesel until they're warm, then they sound like stock...you'll get used to it...I don't even notice it anymore

No its not knocking or ticking. I just adjusted the valves last week. Its just when im at idle it sounds like a deisel. I guess from the responses its normal eh...

Mine gets pretty decent amount of knock when the pistons are cold. It goes away after its warmed up for the most part.
What really annoys the hell out of me is that the injectors "taps" are amplified through my sheetmetal intake manifold. Sometimes I will hear them and think that I need to adjust the valve lash....then I remember its the damn squirters

i dont have a sheetmetal intake manifold but my injectors sounds like I need to adjust the valve lash to sometimes
93LSivic: what brand are your injectors

well maybe its the clearance that makes the sound. Im running a .0035 JE 10:1 flat top if that matters in my 83mm B18C.
My 9:1 Endyn Rollerwaves also "deisel"'ed in my old 84mm LS/VTEC

Im running RC 550's right now. I have 95# Siemen Deka's sitting next to me waiting to go in. Im wondering how they are gonna sound

I always joke about my turbo-deisel honda. A lot of people are ignorent and will believe anything you say. hahahaha It's probably normal but for saftey sake take her to a mechanic quick. Better safe than sorry in this situation.
It should only sound like that at IDLE

Do a search on "forge piston noise" and you'll find that a lot of pele experience this...its pretty normal. I also researched google news groups and almost everyone there says the same.
You could have piston slap. Piston slap may occur on many applications depending on the clearances used when you built the motor.
Or-
It could be just that you need a valve lash. Many people confuse the two.
If the noise goes away completely after it warms up then it's piston slap
else valve lash is required. .

the clearance on my geo's arias are .0035. cold idle is perfect. I read an article about piston anti-slap techniques... That they can manufacture a piston very very slightly out of round, and then once it warms up it goes back to it's normal shape, thus having a tighter clearance upon cold start, and have the proper clearance once warmed up.. i wonder if i could find that article.. hrmm.....

ditto...i just noticed the noise today when my buddy and i got done rewelding my dp and he asked me what the noise was. i was about to say the valves but i had just adjusted them yesterday. so i remembered that it was the slight piston slap from the ross pistons before heating up.

reason why i get a slight piston slap is cause ross recommends a clearance of .006 for turbo/small bore engines using their pistons. guess it's cause turbo motors run hotter
