benson and earl have already concluded that a close deck verus open deck really doesnt matter to much. benson uses a open deck because it allows the top of the sleeves to cool better, this is important because most of the heat for detonation occurs at the top edges of the sleeve. with a closed deck you dont get that same cooling effect because of the holes that the coolant travel through. at what point this becomes priority idk but im all for open deck </TD></TR></TABLE> i would love to know how benson PROVED that open deck is better? we have in the past made both open deck sleeves and braced sleeves and we have seen both run and sorry the open deck blocks do not cool any better then the braced sleeves. we have made 1500+ hp on our braced sleeves with no problems and also have many street cars running the same sleeves with not one cooling problem. we could still do open deck if they were better as we make our sleeves in house but we discontinued our open deck econo sleeves to keep the hd sleeves that can hold much more power.

ps im not saying benson does bad work at all he does good work and we have no problems with him or his sleeves.

he didnt say open deck sleeves were better he simplely stated that closed decks were not nessary neither are o-rings. thats all, im not knocking your block in anyway.

My sleeved block with darton sleeves. What I'm saying (yellow circled area) this is supposed to be an open deck sleeves from what I understood as the coolant can pass through these holes. There's no block gaurd or anything, the frame that containes the holes is part of the actual sleeves them selves.

the pic you posted is only a deck support

i thought this was a good read http://hybrid-racing.com/blog/?p=77

i disagree i have had open deck blocks and i see one problem over and over with them and that is sleeve walk ware the sleeve is not supported and moves slightly back and forth blowing head gaskets over and over ware the same setup on a braced sleeve never blows gaskets also i have seen the oringing work for high boost guys as well but i do agree with you closed deck is not needed but i prefer a braced sleeve like ge any day over a unbraced sleeve
