D16y7 turbo build help
I recently picked up a d16y7 with worn rings, I tore it down bare block. I have p2po rods and 75mm ycp pistons that I just bought. So today the engine went to the machine shop for the block to be cleaned, notched, honed and for them to go through the head. Also I have purchased arp head studs, complete gasket kit, and new bearing set. So my first question is will a stock headgasket hold up or should I suck it up and by a cometic? Also what car would be the easiest route to swap that is preferably 1995 or older for emission reasons
? Note my engine has no intake manifold either so I'd like to use a stock one from a car I buy and use it's current engine for donor parts. Power goal is 230-300whp. Turbo will start out as an ebay to4e but only until I can afford something better. Any insight will help drastically, also I'm almost clueless on tuning.

Stick with the honda gasket, you dont need a cometic or want to drop your compression
skip the ebay turbo and use that money twards a real turbo charger

Wow, really putting the horse before the cart on this one..
Personal preference on the car.. I love EF/EG hatchbacks. 1988-1991 EF Civic or 1992-1995 EG. Both drop in engine swaps for this build, but you'd have to do OBD0->OBD1 for the EF chassis.

My personal choice would be a eg hatch. Will any eg intake manifold and all the wires connect no problem. And for the obd conversion I can just buy a harness for that right? Any isn't there something about manual vs auto intake manifolds?

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
I'd just get a Y7 manifold. The Z6 has a fast idle thermo valve (coolant controlled), whereas the Y7 does not. Keep it simple and put what was intended to be on it, but someone else might have better insight than I. I'm guessing you're not looking to put an aftermarket manifold on.

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
I swapped from the Y7 intake manifold to a z6 when I boosted my y7... 10 years ago?
I don't remember it being a pain in the ***. They go for nickels.
You didn't mention a transmission, but I assume you're going to be running a z6/y8 transmission too.

Yeah, new clutch and flywheel but stock trans from whatever car the swap goes in. And so intake manifold? Which one and are the y7 y8 easily interchangeable?

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
So I got it back from the machine shop finally. 717$ later the re assembly process begins. Any input on a turbonetics t3 kit, it's a journal bearing turbo, about 1400$ I'll post more pics as I go

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
The plan is a 93-95 eg hatch. I'm still not sure on power goals, I'm looking for 300 but I'd go for higher if I had some assurance that I won't blow the engine haha. The build is basically vitara pistons and p2p0 rods, arp head studs, all new gaskets and bearings obviously. So Idk what will be the first thing to go if I push it too hard

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
So I have to ship the engine to across the country because I'm moving so there will be a good delay on the project but it's mostly back together, I have to get the oil pump ported still I forgot to have the machine shop do that. Still am not sure where to go for a turbo. I thought about getting the turbonetics "super 60" kit but am not sure yet, I'm looking for something pretty simple to install vs having to do a custom manifold and everything. So mainly looking for a t3 flange turbo. But the turbonetics kit I heard you don't spool till high rpm and you make good hp number but your car is still slow. Can anyone confirm that haha. It's gonna be a daily driver with a goal of 300-350 hp also if using that turbo how many psi will it take to get those numbers? I just want to beat stock subies and mustangs please help haha

Re: D16y7 turbo build help
you should destroy stock subies/mustangs without any effort at that HP level.
my setup:
stock y7
ex transmission
z6 intake manifold,
t3 .42/.48 at 11 pounds of boost
185whp, 175tq
2400 pounds
13.60 @ 105mph on street tires.
could have easily done better with a better 60 foot and some drag radials. it was a great street car because it never spun too hard and would always hook up. always wanted to try and do 12's with a stock sohc motor but never got around to it
