Cruise control + boost?
Who out there still uses cruise control?
My cruise control, set at 80, goes into boost for a couple seconds at a time. Giving me a cruising speed of 79-83-79-83-79-etc... basically useless.
Can you/has anyone ever modified their cruise system to not give it so much throttle during acceleration?

Re: (pheurton-skeurto)
I don't know if they used different cruise components after 1996, but all the Hondas/Acuras I've owned/driven w/cruise were 1988-1996, and all were not lightning fast with the throttle body - even after cresting a steep hill (something that would make it speed up fast).
The only time I've seen boost on my 90 sedan and 95 coupe when cruise was on, I had the 'accel' button depressed, same with my brother's 96 GSR (54trim). They always maintained speed perfectly unless you went down a steep hill.
IIRC there is a direct link to your pedal for a Honda/Acura's CC, at least what i've seen. You'd have to move it farther from the fulcrum of motion (towards the pedal's tip) to make to react slower, or at least not as much. I would think its not the most fun modification.

Re: Cruise control + boost? (preludestud11)
Thanks for the responses. This little turbo just spools up so fast, along with the Type R tranny that puts me even higher in the rpms.
I'll check out the possible mods, then just take out the dead weight if it's not going to work right.

Re: (Turbo-charged)
Since you have such a small turbo it obviously doesn't take much boost to get it going, and there's enough load at low throttle and highway speeds to see boost. My advice would be to not use cruise control

HAHA ok ok, the average speed in the fast lane is about 80 in CA. It actually works ok at 65 and below in 5th.
I like the check valve theory. If the cruise control uses vacuum to decide how much to pull the throttle, that may work.

mine used to work great last year...
then all I changed was TB, and took out power steering, and now it doesnt work anymore very well.... it still works.. just fluctuates ALOT.... like the OP described

my vaccum is perfect... 20-22 at idle and never a problem...
I use a holley 68mm TB... so that could be a problem

Re: (Schister66)
the newer (obd2) cruise units are vaccume controlled (or vaccume powered)...
The older ones actually have an electric motor to pull the throttle cable.
Just FYi... that is why some people have problems with cruise, and some don't

I'm going to try the check valve. If vacuum (or lack of) pulls the wire, then maybe boost pulls it harder.
I'll try a restirictor if that doesn't work, then I'm going to give up and remove it.
I'll post an update.

Re: (JDogg)
well, I love the old OBDI cruises that did not sense vac. It only has the control box, controls, and wires going to the stepper motor under the hood.
regardless, even boosted, the cruise should work the same, if not respond and smooth out quicker than before.

Re: (JaredKaragen)
The cruise in my 99 Si absolutely sucked...I took it out before I was even boosted. It would give me a 4 or 5mph difference...reacted slow, but sped up too fast.

Re: (JaredKaragen)
If it uses a vacuum diaphram to hold the throttle open then positive pressure will have the opposite effect. The boost will fill the diaphram and will not hold the throttle open, unless you had a check valve and then it would'nt work in boost anyways. If you had a steper motor that worked off map and vss then of coarse you would have no problem.

Re: (Ubertec)
Well, something is not right with some of these theories, because when it sees boost, it has no problem pulling on the wire. It seems to open the throttle even more when in boost. It definitly does not shut the throttle.
I still haven't messed with it, but I will check it out this weekend and post up the results.

Re: (Turbo-charged)
The big throttle body could be making it more sensitive, since now it does'nt have to open the throttle plate as far as before.
Yes car's feel faster with the cruse on, your not in control.
The cruze on my Escort still works with boost, it's also vacuume powered. BUT it will not go into boost with the cruze on, since it need's vacuume to work. A check valve should fix that. But not really an issue.
