When balancing a crank for a fully built motor...does the crank have to be balanced on it's own. Some people say that the crank should be balanced with the flywheel and crank pulley that your going to use.

Whats the truth behind this???

it can be balanced on its own, its just the domestics that would need the flywheel and crank

Maybe you can balance the entire rotating assembly, but the pistons and rods should already be balanced, or matched to the same weight.

Earl correct me if Im wrong but I dont think its possible to balance a crank shaft, well the entire rotational assembly together. I think many people are under the impression that you connect the pistons, rods, and flywheel to the crank then spin it around and balance accordingly. I was under this impression too until I saw how my crank was balanced. All the peices are balanced seperately.

I know my pistons and rods were weight corrected to a certain limit. I know my crank was balanced also. I guess I'll just have them check the crank pulley to make sure the damper is working and it isn't creating any vibrations, and maybe balance the flywheel too...if thats what they do.

Which reminds me, I don't have a flywheel yet. What should I be thinking of going with??? Stock, lightened...or a CM flywheel or something. It's for a fully built....35PSI motor.

balancing all of the components together means those componets must be used together.

This leads me to believe any shop that tells you that the rotating assembly needs to be balanced together is trying to sell you on a half *** job.

I know I'd like to be able to swap a flywheel if needed.

Speaking of flywheels.... B16a1 ef9 what are you going to do with the car? A heavy flywheel can actually help acceleration. Remember it stores inertia while reving. A light one will give you more engine braking...

If you hang weight on a 4 cyl crank or you balance it with no weight, the results will always be the same.

My Fidanza wasn't balanced...My Clutchmaster Twin and Tilton were, tho.
