Couple pics of the build up...
Bored so i thought i post a couple pictures of the progress....
pics are not that good so have to make do...
Ls block
me removing piston
some of the scraped components
the bare block
the crank(a little dark but you get the point)
ge block guard
guard installed
thats it for now... block is at the machine shop and rod clearance were done today... manage to get all of them around .015in clearance... found three rods took green bearings and one took a brown... kind of a pain in the butt, but feels good to do it myself

Re: (Ej6andslow)
OT: Does the Block Guard serve sort of the same purpose as Sleeving? Like basically, does it protect the sleeves like Sleeving does? Sorry for the nooooob question. Just trying to expand my knowledge.

Re: (jarelee)
i dont store the crank on its side i stand it up... only took a pic....
which brings up a debatable topic... i dont believe the crank will warp from laying it down... the crank will warp if its laying down on its side in a holder because the weight and lack of support in the center will over time warp it... but if on its side(on the counter weights) i dont see why it would warp... to me just an urban lengend... also something to think about... if this idea was infact true i believe honda would put it in its service manual...
on the block guard question... block guard is an aluminum brace that is fit and tapped into the coolant jacket a set amount below the deck... the brace adds support to your stock sleeves... it is believed that with higher levels of boost the walls may shift when under extreme pressure... the guard strengthens the walls to a point but only around the spot it is installed... sleeving a motor basically replaces the stock sleeves with ones that are thicker and alot stronger making the motor capable of handling more boost... im not 100% sure that they are thicker but since everyone bores the sleeves out bigger im assuning they are...
everyone believes blockguards are no good... but if installed correct(evenly) and then taken to the machince shop to have the cyclinder roundness adjusted(by hone or bore) they will help... overheating is also i known problem but i believe that this problem is cause from improper height installation... i believe ge suggests the guard be installed 3/8" below the deck... hope this helps...
btw... i dont have money for sleeving or else i would have done it... want 500whp from a stock block... at 20+psi.. to me... better safe than sorry...

yes, they will warp...
we actaully go bored back when i was in college...and layed a crank down on the ground, stood one up, and put on in a crank holder, and left one in a block...
the block one didn't warp any, the one standing up didn't either...but the one laying down did...although VERY slightly....along wiht the one in the crank holder
maybe not enough reason to worry about it..but enough for me
<-----wuss who worries too much
btw, a crank holder is only meant to be use to mock up the rotating assembly, i thought

Re: (AlphaMike)
i know, i know... i do it just because i dont want to buy another crank... i have it standing up... yes true a holder is only meant to check for clearances and such... i understand all of what is said... i too worry which is why my crank is standing up right now... i had a discussion about the warp issue a couple weeks ago with a tech at my job who has ben working on hondas for 20+ years... i asked him because for about 3 weeks my crank was laying down... he said he does not believe that because there is nothing that would cause it to warp... i believe him although i still have my crank standing up... better safe than sorry...

Bah. The GE one is hella nice. I think if its installed correctly, it could actually be compared to the gaurd that comes with the new style of sleeves.
