Cometic or no Cometic
Do you high boost guys run cometic or factory gaskets?Ran the car this weekend and popped a head gasket so I need to replace it anyway and wanted your opinion. Also do you copper coat the gasket before install?
Cometic, you have many more options. Great customer service.
If your not looking for something custom, OEM is also fine. Some of the Hot Rod cars use OEM.
Have you had the head checked for flatness? Why did the gasket blow? In most cases it's not the gaskets fault.

I have used cometic on all of my applications and had no issues. Alot of people will install a cometic gasket in there and if it doesnt hold or seal be real quick to blame the gasket company as being junk or what not. Cometic makes great head gaskets that seal to surfaces that are within SPEC. I never use copper spray on my heads, but there are alot of different feelings on this. You will find posts on Hondatech and other boards that indicate both pros and cons of using copper spray on MLS gaskets. I cant dig it up but someone went into detail about how a MLS gasket is suppose to seal with heat expansion and with the addition of the copper spray it doesnt allow it to seal with how it expands under heat. Bottom line the cometic will hold the boost you want to run and it will seal just make sure your head and block surfaces are stright and no warpage at all. Cometic has been around for years and is know as one of the leaders in head gaskets.
Everything seems to check out fine.Thats the reason I posted. We used copper spray. The only other reason I think it was the gasket is becuase the whole gasket blowed out.All the way around when we pulled it off we used a tourqe wrench and the studs were still tourqed good.So it doesen't seem that the head lifted. The pistons looked real good no signs of detonation..So if you guys have any ideas please let me know. Also is it possible to over tourqe a head or if I didn't have a overflow it caused to much pressure? If it matters cars on about 25psi 660whp

ive used both cometic and oem on my car........if your popping gaskets there is either an issue in the tune, or with the motor (head not flat, sleeves not flat, etc)
i popped am OEM gasket last weeked, but that was because the car had some issues and ran 15.5:1 AFR @ 40psi.
missfires at high boost will cause hell on a headgasket

ive always wondered why so many people have issues with cometic head gaskets. people blame the deck/head surface or installation error, but somehow they switch to an oem HG and suddenly there are no issues.....
cometic seems hit or miss, oem is always a hit though.

most people that i see that have headgasket issues with a cometic gasket have issues with oem gaskets as well.
bret mentioned above that he only uses OEM gaskets, but he failed to mention that he has more headgasket issues than a Volkswagen corrado LOL

I'm using cometic on my build. I was worried about it when I read all the posts on how alot of people don't like them. My my builder reasured me that they are great and the only time people have issues is on the install. He built tons of motors with them and he swears that they are really good.
OEM multi layer here... worked good before, so I am going that route agian.
Also cometic does not offer nor want to make a headgasket for my application. So a simple call to GE and vola... they worked a stock gasket to my needs and had it on my doorstep in no time.
