Default CODE 7: TPS....Please HELP

Here is the cituation,
97 LS equiped with drag III kit. The car is getting a code 7, wich is the TPS sensor. Also, the car will lean out a little on top at 100% throttle at 4-5 psi. Can the TPS sensor be bad? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I would say that TPS is bad if it is throwing a code

I know there is something obviously wrong. We have tried two diff. ITB's and thesame error poped up on the ecu. Does anybody ever had one of these sensor's gone bad?

wonder if that's my problem.. im' leaning out above 5k and last week threw two codes.. and the car went crazy idle at a stoplight.. resetting the ecu cleared it up.. and occasionally i get a "surge"ing effect at a constant speed...

any way to test the tps?

The only way I know to test the TPS is with a volt meter, and we have done that. But we dont' know what the initial readings should be. DOES ANYBODY HAVE THE ACURA BOOK SO THEY CAN LOOK IT UP FOR US? (TPS VOLTAGE READINGS)
Thanks,

do u have a vafc by any chance you can read the diagnostics on the tps from there. in any case i believe voltage should be around 1.2 v correct me if i'm wrong

I believe the voltage at closed throttle should be @ .40 - .50 volts and 4.5 volts at WOT. I saw someone mentioned ITB in an above post. Is that an individual throttle body, or just the stock. Either way, moving the tps to alter the voltage will have the above mentioned effects on the engine, sloppy idle and or leaning up top.

I had this problem not too long ago with my TPS sensor. I would accelerate to a certain rpm and then a violent jerking motion would occur....then the car would throw a CEL. I come to find out that it was corrosion in one of the wires in the TPS. I couldn't see it myself but my mechanic found it when he took off my SC.

that is the right voltage but at idle the voltage should be as close to .5 volts as you can get it.

if the voltage is out a little try hitting it with a screw driver.

that is it for now typing on this iPAQ with cdpd modem is a pain.

This LS has a stock throttle body with the stock TPS. We do have a AFC in the car, wich I can look at the voltage readings in the (ECT.) section. We shall look and see, what happens.

dragnGSR: Which wire was corroded? I'm throwing the same CEL (code 7) with the same symptoms (car jerks back & forth and rough idle). Whenever I think I've narrowed it down to a faulty wire, the car miraculously, and temporarily, cures itself. I think my ground wire between the TPS plug and the IAT sensor is bad, but that's just my best guess. Checking voltages and continuity of the wires isn't too difficult, but it's tough to measure resistances at the TPS itself b/c of the awkward position. I'd be interested to hear everyone's overall consensus about what's causing the problem. Bad TPS? Bad wiring?

Yeah, I just installed a BBK throttle body on mine and I think the TPS is giving me some crap. Same deal as you guys..funky idle, jerking sometimes when I gun it. Sure does look good though, especially with that nice shiny Missing Link up top!

Since everyone is thinking about TPS readings, I just put a V-AFC on my GSR and I'm getting a very very rapid fluctuation of my TPS reading at idle - from around .45 to .65, but flashing back and forth faster than I can even read it. Is this a sign of a bad connection or bad sensor?

I'm not exactly sure which wire it was since my mechanic found it. He just told me he found out the problem and fixed it. I know what you're talking about...it only occured sometimes.

dragnGSR: If you think about it, next time you talk to your mechanic, would you ask which wire was bad? There's nothing worse than trying to trace a faulty wire in those microscopic wire harnesses that they put in our cars.

dbman96: I think your readings are still within spec. I need to doublecheck helms, but I'm pretty sure you're ok.

I'll be sure to do that the next time I speak with him. If I get a chance tomorrow, I might check it out myself.

Take the TB off, get a dremel with a cut off wheel. Cut a slit in the rivet so you can fit a straight edge screwdriver in it and remove it. Then install with normal screws.

this happend to me in the middle of a race. either it's a bad sensor or wires are lose. My wire's had been cut when the guy before me ran a zex kit on the car. he needed to use the tps sensor. After a 2 years it eventually broke....the wiring that is. I soldered the wires together and haven't had a problem since.
