Re: Clutch swap without an alignment tool?? (xbird)
I've done 15- 20 or so clutch jobs, and have never used a tool... I take my time and line them up by eye, and all have been successful.

ive never done one without the tool nor have experience with eyeing it up so i cant really knock that technique, however i feel safer using the tool. usually if you buy the kit it will come with a tool... or you can tell the shop to send you one wiht the clutch kit

what you can do is, use a socket with a diameter that is smaller then the diameter of the clutch spline. Stick it in, then rotate it around and just eyeball it so that its center.

we "eyeballed" it for my friends rex and it worked just fine. we used a tool with mine cuz the clutch kit came with one, that was easier and didnt have to worry about it at all. a local auto store should carry one.

get it semi tight and then put the trans in, and they you can just rotate the crank and tighten the pp bolts one at a time as they come to were the starter hole is.

it's not that hard to do. me and my friend just did it this weekend, we fucked up a ball joint so we are still trying to fix that. but it;s not that hard, have an extra jack to help drop the tranny, or use a engine lift to "suspend" the tranny, earier to line up.

I just pulled my tranny for the second time in a year....this time rather than messing with a jack I just pulled it off the engine and out the top of the engine bay. Thing only weighs like 70 lbs.
