Cleaning the crankshaft
Ok, so im cleaning parts to get them ready for assembly, so now im working on the crank and due to other visual evidence i have had i know there is most likely metal debris behind those little silver ***** in the counter weights. Well the only way ive seen this spot cleaned out before is by drilling out those ***** and cleaning and then rewelding some stock back in there to plug up the holes. Well i dont want to go through all that again so im looking for ideas on how to clean behind them *****.... fire away!

Quote of the year. Have you considered having it hot-tanked?

lol, yeah, i think i should try to reword that, but ill let it "hang" around for a little bit. But anyways, everything you can see on the crank is clean, but everytime i have seen the silver ***** removed there is been metal built up behind them. So i just dont feel secure putting a crank that could be housing metal into my motor, ya know? I would rather know there is nothing there.

By *****, you mean oil galley plugs?
The only way is to have a machine shop drill them out and clean them out thoroughly and then have some removable allen caps tapped in and loctited.

I've tried all of the above and the only one that works for me is to actually remove the ***** and clean behind them. I actually left a pretty clean crank in a hot tank for 2 or 3 hours and then removed the ***** and there was still about an 1/8" of crud in there. I usually just tig a little tower of metal onto the ball and use a pair of dykes to pop it out then replace the ***** with new ones.

That's your answer ^^^. Remove them and tap the hole for a pipe plug.

For those of you who drill the plugs out.. how do you get the drill bit started? How do you make a dent in them things so the bit doesnt keep sliding off to the side. And do you have to use a carbide tipped bit, or will a normal drill bit cut through them things.

I haven't had much luck drilling them out.Tig welding a "handle" on them seems to work out best.
