Default CBR 954 COP setup

After searching a bit, I have come across a few posts saying these coils need special spark plugs. What makes the CBR coils need a special spark plug?

I have a set that I am planning on using on a Toyota MR2 turbo with an Autronic 500R ignition box and SMC standalone. The part that has me concerned is that the coils only have two wires. What does it use for the return on the high coil side? Is this where the special plug part comes into play?

These coils require a spark plug that the tip will unscrew from. I use the Denso Iridiums with these coils. They're expensive, but about all you can find to fit, that have a cold heat range. The coils have 2 wires because there is no ignitor built in. If you're using them with the Autronic box, then it's a CDI box and no ignitor is required. With a CDI system, the ignition box stores the charge rather than the coil, so no dwell at the coil is required.

Thanks Tony,

I don't know if they will work in Honda's but NGK BR(6-9)ES plugs have a tip that can be unscrewed. I'll have to see if I can find a Toyota plug that the head can be unscrewed from.

Thanks for the info.

We run Bosch 'super' plugs in our CRX, they have the unthreaded tip and will fit your Toyota cyl head. Call your local Napa and give them part #: 7553

I believe the Bosch # is: 0 242 240 539-076

Compared to a stock VTEC plug we believe them to be 2 ranges colder than stock

I use bosh plugs for a 00 VW GTI 2.0L with the CBR 954 coil sticks and never had a problem with them. they are also heat range 8. I've pushed over 500wph+ on them
