car keeps breaking up and blowing ignitors? help me troubleshoot
this is a friends car. piston and rod vtec motor. it will intermittently break up bad and last night it was shooting a nice fireball out of the exhaust. the rpms that it breaks up varies, but its really under boost at higher tps readings.
the car was dyno tuned and it ran fine on the dyno, made 400hp.
also, the owner has blown a few ignitors in the distributor in the recent past. now he is using an ls distributor with a vtec motor and b16 head. is that the source of the probblems?
his plugs are gapped around .022-.025 bkr7e's. i told him to gap down to .020 and see if it helps. where else can we look? he doesnt have a wideband installed yet so i cant see his afr, and hes using hondata and i dont so i cant see his timing and other settings

i was having similar problems with old obd0 d16a6 dizzys...my car was making a tick over 300 WHP.
is he using OEM or parts-store dizzy parts? OEM are much better, from my experience.
i also vented the engine bay (kicked the hood up) and it helped...happened much less frequently.
now i'm OBD1 and it isnt happening ,and i'm making more HP. odd

he may have a short somewhere in his harness that is making contact with something, i did.
does he have any MSD parts on the car? not that they are bad, i use them just certain things will help pinpoint an issue

pehaps the tune is just off, and the spark is not strong enough to make the jump @ the plug, with the cyl pressures its at now. perhaps there is just too much resistance, and its poping ignitors because of it. i would check all the electrical connections in the distributer, make sure they are good, clean, sturdy contacts. make sure non of the wires(in the distributer, and leading up to it) have any sort of corrosion. id also check the cap/rotor to see if its in good shape.

Just put an M&W Pro 10 on it and forget about it, it bypasses the ignitor and will have enough spark energy to where you won't have to worry about misfire problems.

Re: (GsrRussell)
the pro 10 looks awesome, but i think its out of his price range.
next time i see him i will check the distributor on the inside.
could this be because of using a nonvtec dist. on a vtec motor?
