just finished throwing my motor together. here are the specs:

b18a1 block
b16 head has previously been decked
used the g.e. ls/v dowel pins
b16 head was tapped and had a plug put in for the oil.
fresh bore with std size wiseco 8.8cr pistons
eagle rods
all oem honda bearings/thrust bearings...etc
oem ls head gasket I think it was a 94?
arp head studs torqued to 75 (buddy helping me put moly lube on threads going into the block, but left the threads that the nuts go onto dry)


I paid my buddy who has been working on hondas for quite a while to help me throw the head on. the bottom end was assembled at a local honda performance shop after all the machine work was done.

It has a severe oil leak, about 1 qt per 10 minutes run time.
I looked at all the ls-v adapter lines, turbo oil feed lines...etc. none of those are leaking. its really hard to spot the leak, but it almost looks like its coming from the T bracket that goes to the rear motor mount...wtf? also If I look right behind the hard water line coming from the water pump. you can see some oil (or at least its shiny back there) so I don't know if its headgasket or what is going on. tried searching but all I found was people complaining about a couple of drops near the front/tranny side of there motor.


any imput would be greatly appreciated, my car has been down for 2 months now, It fired up first try and everything else seems fine till this.

head gasket may be on upside down. when this happens it unshrouds the jet that feeds the head. be careful because if it is, your cams arent getting oil.

I asked my buddy about that already and he claimed that it said up when he put it on.

did u make sure the plug u tapped and put in was below the surface of the head when u screwed it in?

also with an LS headgasket and a ls/vtec setup. sometimes the little brass rivets on the head gasket will jam betweem the head and the block. although i run ls headgasket and that didnt cause that much of an oil leak.

weird. also check your sandwich adapter and make sure the old filter gasket didnt stick to the block when u screwed on your adapter...

yes the pulg is set into the head so it isn't holding it up at all.


not sure on the rivets, is there any way to check that?

the sandwich adapter isn't leaking at all.

you said it was leaking by the rear motor mount. It might be the o ring on the black box on the back of the motor for your crankcase and pcv valve

its not that, I thought it was that at first. but it is all dry around the black box. its def leaking higher then that.

what about the oil control orifice? did you pull it out and put a new o-ring on it?

Could be a few things... Maybe a rear main seal seeping??

and I don't think its the rear main seal because it appears to be leaking by the head.
I really hope it isn't a h.g.
but it is what it is. just wanna make sure of what it is before I pull it back apart.

the oil control orifice is that little oil jet on the deck that allows oil into the head. if the headgasket is on upside down this is left uncovered and can leak. i can see it leaking if it doesnt have an oring. possibly.

it has to be the head gasket on upside down or the dowl pins were not put in correctly and is lifting the head off a little (i have done this by accident). and also check to make sure that the plugs are all inside the head.

Its prob the hole in the head. My new head leaked a TON of oil and we had no idea what it was lol. I was later embarrased to know it the cylinder head hole not plugged. If its leaking that much oil its prob from there

i bet you have pcv valve stuck closed .

the hole in the head is pluged. threaded and put a allen plug in there with locktite.

Im going to take it down to pac-west (local honda performance shop)

if it is the H.G. on upside down my buddy owes me money.

first make sure ALL of the oil galley plugs are tight, machine shops have a tendency to not torque them down.....If you still cant find it degrease the motor really good, let it dry COMPLETLY, then dust it with baby powder everywhere...then look for the trail of oil...it makes it alot easier to find, or go buy some oil uv dye and bust out the black light

it was the oil plug in the head. it was loose and not a NPT thread (not a tapered pipe thread)
fixed now, just need to get it tuned

im doing a ls vtec now and using type r pistons getting rods resized at machone shop and pistons installed you think its worth the $50 to have them micropolish crank at the same time or dont bother ls block has 110,000 miles but looks good using stock rods
