Broken d16 dohc, what caused this?
Setup:
Engine: d16a9 dohc, wiseco, eagle, blockguard, stock sleeves
Head: some headwork done, crespo stage2 cams, crespo springs
FI: revhard stage 3 (precision sc50, turbine .48)
Fuel: Walbro 341, stock lines, aem rail+fpr, 680cc injectors, ems turboedit + gm3bar
Used on tuning: Innovate lm1+xd1, autometer egt gauge
I have tuned it by myself in streets with first setup, ~8:1cr and 27psi of boost daily with no problems in engine, about 12K miles. Then i changed headgasket to thicker and cr raised to 8.5-8.6, I lower ignition map by few degrees. Drive about 100miles with 12psi, and had problem with ignition, more boost than 12psi it started to run with 3 cylinders or something, no power at all. Then gapped plugs about 0.28, started to ignite on higher boost. I drive with 3 gear 4000->8000rpm, it runs fine, then i dropped speed back to ~60mph and motor is now running maybe 2 cylinder, i drive to side of the road, and we towed car to the garage, this is what found:

Afr was rich, about 11.2 egt was low as 1400F max (probe in dp) fuel was
shell v-power (93octane) im not sure how much boost i runned, maybe 20psi but something happened with boost at the end off pull because autometer boostgauge line was go off from intakemanifold. Plugs was bcpr 7es-11 (Too hot)
Cylinder 1 is that who lose a retainer. Why?
What caused these little marks on pistons and head, detonation? Pre ign? Or something **** through the intake (i have filter)
2 and 3 cylinder plugs gap was closed (can detonation do this?)
Cylinder4 seems to be ok, and headgasket d16z6 modified was ok too.

looks like piston to valve contact + detonation or something? Im not sure but i know that the valve should be closed in this pic not 1 open 1 closed so something is definitely wrong with the head/valvetrain

the same thing happend to my buddys ride, retainer broke for no damn reason, it sucks. no you caint reuse any of that ****. the nicks are from **** that broke off and bounced around in there. have fun with the rebuild. and remember, a thicker head gasket will lower compression.

Like someone asked, was there a filter on the turbo? Due to the damage to the turbo, Im leaning towards sand or something similar being sucked into the turbo/engine. See how theres much more damage on the middle two cylinders? That could be because as they were in the intake stroke something was sucked into the engine and didnt cause as much damage on the other cylinders as they were on a different stroke. Due to the tiny pits, Im not thinking piston-to-valve..do you have pics of the rest of the valves? That may help us out here. Im sorry to say, but with that damage nothing is reusable, it will cause extreme hot spots and nothing but trouble. I really hate to see stuff like this it really sucks Let us help you out here and we will find the cause and make sure it doesnt happen again

Turbinewheel has little damage, compressor is 100% ok and compressorhouse is ok too. Yes i have
filter in turbo, 200miles used now. Here is some pictures of head:

With OEM valvetrain and crespostage2 cams i used 8K revlimit 10K miles. With crespo valvesprings i rev 8.5K.

so you had aftermarket cams and valve srings, but oem retainers? stock redline is 7200 right? I bet too much overreving just caused that retainer to break and allow metal particles into the combustion chamber causing all of those marks. did you find any other broken metal besides that retainer?

Yeah, I second the overreving past redline and thus causing the problems. If the turbineside is ok, then you can pretty much discount the foreign object damage and that damage came from stuff inside the engine.
