boosted ls, what tranny?

little more technical than just saying tranny x or y....at least if your looking to make an effecient quarter mile car....sure the type r trans has closer shorter gears...all fine for someone with 175-225 whp, he wont burn through gears like someone with boost....a trans with long gears is prolly best depending on exactly what your whp is....youll prolly be best with a gsr or ls tranny....and they are cheaper. in lsd in a turbocar prolly wont make a large difference either, not if you plan on going in a straight line....id say drop 400 bucks on a ls tranny and see how it drives....imo
I am Running a gsr Tranny on my Ls Pulls nice short gears better then long pull of the ls tranny depending on Amount Of Psi I say go with the gsr tranny u will come flying out of the hole but your problem is top end. But if you have enough boost it will work effectivley with the gsr tranny and pull nice. **** vtec it's all about the boost baby
It all depends on what you want to do with it. If its a 1/4 mile car you want to be just about topped out in 5th gear at the trap. If you want to beat supras on the highway you want at least 160 if not more. If you want to dodge cones in a parking lot you want to be topped out at 50.
It just depends on your needs. I will tell you, the shorter the gearing the faster it will be.

I think you mean topped out at 4th? Topped out at 5th would be some insane trap speeds.

people this think because one tranny has longewr gears its better, or if it has super short gears it is better. truth is the tranny that matches your engine best is the one that keeps your engines RPMS int he sweet spot all the time while racing. a b16 tranny would actually HURT a b18b IMO because they have no top end and the B16 tranny would keep the RPM's high. I think a GSR tranny would be perfect for an LS with boost.
A B16 tranny is *** on a LS motor w/turbo!! you'll burn like crazy through most of the gears!! There is just way too much torque with this combination to get it moving effectively. Also you WILL have to shift alot sooner than the higher revving VTEC motors due to the lack of that few extra 1000s RPM actually causing you to go slower in the 1/4mile than if you had a bit of a longer gearing such as the B18c1 tranny.

My LS tranny worked fine on my turbo LS. w/ 274whp, 7500rpm rev limit, and 2700lb car some shorter gears were desired though. sooo
I swapped to a gsr tranny and the car feels peppier. But now 4th gear tops out @ 114mph w/ 7500rpm rev limit. My car traps around 110-111 so the gears are nice, almost perfect, as it sits. I havn't ran it w/ the new tranny though so I dont know if ill be shifting into 5th or not.
Kinda sucks though because I could be making alot more power and have alot less wieght then I do right now. but then I will using 5th gear big time in the 1/4. Next, Im going for a 225/50 tire to get 117mph out of my 4th gear. No point in revving higher either, my car makes more torque to the ground in 4th @ 5300 then it does in third @ 7500. For someone running a stock 6800rpm LS rev limit I can't even imagine a gsr trans, let alone a B16 w/ anywhere over 250whp.
like rawsnaelt said, the LS motor makes its peak torque from 5k-6k rpm's. after about 7300rpm's it becomes pointless to stay in the gear. Its not a vtec motor, peak torque is not near redline, people need to realize this. LS motors need some gear spread where vtec motors dont. Size ur gears for the 1/4 mile and use slick/tire size to fine tune them.
Im not saying LS motors need long gears. Im just saying they can benefit from gear spread where vtec motors won't because of the dynamics of the LS torque curve. If you fine tune the final drive/slick size to put the LS 4th @ the right place you can benefit from running a shorter 1st/2nd w/ the LS tranny.
for a LS w/ cams, general rule of thumb for vtec motors should be followed. Im just seeing a complete left field swing from people talking about long gears being good to shorter is always better when there is really no real answer. Sometimes you have to look specifically at the cars total power, the powerband, and the slick size to determine which tranny is best.

pretty much. anyone in here saying they have a problem with traction, needs better tires or to leanr how to drive, not a longer tranny.
