Boosted B16 - Smoking Issues
Alright so we're working on this boosted B16a project that we've been having some issues with for the past few months, but right when we thought we had everything buttoned up, it goes to **** again. lol
Anyways, so we got the turbo kit all put on and **** and then the head gasket went so ordering in a new head gasket and block guard (since it was all going to be apart anyway) we decided to put everything in. Well we got it together and re-timed and now it's smoking like a bitch (white smoke) out the exhaust as well as the breather filter on the vaccum that comes off of the valve cover. There's also a newer more audible ticking in the head that we didn't notice before. I was just curious if anyone had any ideas on what this could be besides the head gasket (obviously since it was just replaced AND torqued correctly lol). Thanks in advance.

it is the head gasket from the info you gave me, unless you cracked a sleeve. You don't crack sleeves just cranking the car up. did you boost on it?
How could that be possible with brand new Cometic head gasket JUST installed? It hasn't even been driven since the head gasket was installed.
The fact that it was just installed could be the culprit.
Everything installed correctly to your knowledge? Deck cleaned? Criss Cross bolt pattern?
I know those are trivial ideas but just throwing them out there.

As far as we know everything was installed correctly, torqued correctly, and done to the best of our knowledge.

Upon further inspection and testing more things, we've found that there is white smoke billowing from the damn dip stick hole as well which pretty much just ruled out head ****. We're assuming rings or something? Any suggestions?
you got coolant mixing with oil. take the head off. did you properly install the headgasket?
your at a point now where you have to take it apart anyway

I'm pretty sure everything was installed correctly. This head however was not milled prior to head gasket change, could this possibly be a problem? Never overheated engine.
stock pistons and rods?
i notice with forged pistons you get some blow-by in the crank case from the looser clearences. smoke out the exhaust can be other issues.
try driving the car a few miles. sometimes oil/coolant gets into the cylinders/exhaust when doing a head job and it takes a bit of time to burn off.
if the smoke does not stop then there is deffinatly a problem.

Do a compression test......i had the same problem......white smoke from the filter and exhaust.....and it sound like a subaru.....lol...i had a cracked piston and bad headgasket......good luck
Well that sucks.
Anyways, I'm pretty positive there isn't a cracked piston unless it has done so since initial start up.

I’m going to guess the headgasket didn’t just suddenly go bad all on it own, so you bolted the turbo to it, boosted it (untuned) and the headgasket went bad. Well detonation owned your ringlands, check piston #3 would be my guess, although it could be any of them.
i bet...
You just put the block guard in, an a new head gasket right?
Sounds to me like your block guard isn't letting your head sit flat on your short block. THATS WHY YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT DECK'D! meaning, shaved flat, iv seen block guards crack sleave's upon install aswell.
Also sounds like SOMEONE turned a cam shaft while number 1 pistion was at top dead center an bent a valve.
I have witnessed all that happen upon a head gasket replacement lol a long long long time ago. Do a compression test, then pull the head off an take a peak.
Or, you did not ever really BLOW your head gasket, just cracked a sleave. What was your A/F when your gasket blew?... how many psi?..
thats my 2 cents on the subject!
