Default boost + rings going bad: nature of the beast or.....?

It seems that I hear of many people who are running boosted setups and/ or nitrous, and they say their rings are toast after not too many miles... blowby being predominant and low compression tests being the evidence.....

In your experience, are stock honda rings just not up to the task of holding such power?

What about upgraded rings, such as what comes with aftermarket forged pistons?

And are Total Seal rings just a waste of $?

why not just upgrade the whole piston?? if you have it apart might as well do it correctly..

Stock honda pistons cant hold much power at all.

IMO, at the very least go with aftermarket pistons. That is if the motor is being torn into/apart. Rings usually cause less trouble than ringlands on stock slugs also.

Its true that the ringlands are the weakest point, not the rings. Many people will say "i think i blew the rings", when in actuality it is usually the ringlands.

Yeah... unless you wash them out, your rings themselves aren't going to break. It'll be the ringlands.

I ran boosted on my stock block d series for 25k miles and didn't have a problem until I melted a piston (i.e. perfect compression test earlier in the week).

Now i'm on to vitaras... 1500 miles and no problems. Boost doesn't kill rings, but bad tuning kills pistons (at the very least)

If you think about the redline and the power the boosted Honda motors are pushing, then it's not surprising that the rings are going to fail sooner than a stock motor.

Given that you have upgraded the internals and have the motor perfectly tuned, but at the end, it is the rings that are sealing the power. More boost = more power = more dynamic compression = more heat = more wear and tear. So the more power you make with our tiny 4-bangers, the sooner the rings will fail.

<---Has 2 cylinders with absolutely ZERO compression.

Ring lands break. Honda rings are actually pretty good pieces of hardware IMO.

They may wear out a little faster, but 9 times out of 10 they wont just plain out fail. Unless the ringlands have already failed.
