Just wondering what most people use as far as boost controllers? I am planning on going to the drags quite a bit and I have the software for boost by gear, but is this the optimal route or is a mbc good enough? Set up is built h22 looking to have around 450whp. Thanks
Each of these types of controllers is best used based upon the PURPOSE of the car. In circuit and road course situations, boost by gear isn't used or deemed necessary from a software system like that. EBCs that are controlled in the cockpit and not the laptop, allow for the driver to adjust boost settings based upon their driving style and conditions of the track for that day. They can then adjust if necessary if on certain parts of the track if they want to briefly increase power [what is called a "scramble" option, that is either timed as a countdown or manually controlled.
Drag racers typically use a boost by gear option on cars that are difficult to control at higher pressure levels, like in a FWD application, so they tend to use those in conjunction with some sort of 2-step launch control.
Strictly street or street/strip cars can use either an MBC (if they just want a standard higher pressure than their wastegate would normally allow for, and the user has a limited budget). An EBC would be used for a street car, if they want to be able to have better gain and response without having to pop the hood all that time to change settings, or in the case where there are large temperature changes that require them to lower boost settings (like on a cold day).
I have found the best boost control outside of any boost by gear is your FOOT, and your BRAIN. Electronic controls can only help you so much. If you don't get that "driver mod" that is so needed with today's higher hp applications, no matter which one you choose, it won't help.
So pick carefully. Base the need on driving style, not what "everyone else" uses.
