Oil ring is one of the 3 piston rings. It the bottom one and controls the oil on the cylinder walls. You change them all at the same time.

 

couldn't it just be a bad valve seal?

 

could be but prob oil rings...thats a gimme

 

naa... if its just a puff, then I wouldn't worry too much...cars usually spit out puffs of smoke when changing gears...if its pouring out blue smoke and you can smell it even at idle or at a stop light...then you've got oil ring problems...but you should check it out just to be safe...
