Default Blow-by question

Just wondering about how much it would cost to replace the piston ring? Just a round-a-bout estimation.

70 bux for rings. you could just replace those if you pull the head and reuse the headgasket but good things to replace are the headgasket(with a nice cometic one) and head bolts while you are in there(stockies stretch and arp are nice)

not to mention rehoning your sleeves...most likly, you will be paying a lot for labor, not for parts..

good call, forgot about that.

if you do it yourself you could get away spending around 100. rent the tool to hone from autozone or something.

Yea, this is what I was wondering too! How can I detect if I am having this problem though?

If your piston walls still have that cross hatch looking pattern and theres no vertical scores in the walls you don't have to re-hone them. You must take the piston/rod off of the crank and pull it out of the cylinder to replace the rings. Be sure to file fit the new ones to the correct gap (2" down the bore is a good place to measure with a set of dial calipers to set the depth on 4 equal places around the ring)

You have blow-by if your car smokes from the breather tube on the top of the valve cover or through the pcv system, you can disconnect the hoses and rev it a bit while you look under the hood for smoke

I have a breather filter there. Do I just rev the engine alittle at idle to check for smoke?

Don't reuse the stock headgasket! Get a new stock one (better than cometic).

No. You must remove the pistons to replace the rings. It is easy once the head is off and you have dropped the oil pan. If you do it yourself, don't mix pistons or any parts up and be sure to clock the pings properly.

Good luck,
Randy

Anywhere from $1000 to $2500 depending on where you go... I totally wish I could do this myself too...I will have my rods and pistons swapped next month...

you can replace the rings without removing the block, and again if the walls are ot scored, you can just leave it liek that, if so, you cna re-hone it your self...with honing stone...

now, with the engien running, pull out your dipstick, do you see a lot of smoke coming out of there ?
how's your compression ?

hmm, I can do it for you...I recommend getting a new gasket kit and new head bolts, and new rod bearing set..

I can get Arturbo and Direp to do it ...

is pulling the oil full cap off and putting your hand over the opening a good way to gauge blow by? i figure the aire would already be fairly turbulent in there from teh cams spinning.

no ...you will always feel pressure from there...I think the oil dipstick test is the best way..or to do a compression check is the concrete way!

different shops do it different ways...of course it will cost more if the pull the engine to do it, because there's more work involved. Rings are costly dude! I learned the hard way too
