block/head surface preparations for hg install.
Do you guys leave the block deck and head perfectly smooth? I read on older threads that they were roughing it up a bit "to help seal the deck". I don't think that's a good idea.

lmao!! where the hell did you hear that?
you want it perfectly smooth.. one little scratch on it and it may not seal. when i get heads resurfaced they pratically polish them. they look like a mirror. thats when it will seal the best.

The older style fiber composite gaskets worked better with a little roughness to the finish. The new mls steel gaskets only work with a smooth surface.

This almost makes me laugh when I think how my neighbor had me prep his iron v8 blocks for oval racing - run a big-*** file over it for a while, and blow out the shavings. It worked though!
As what to actually use, I definately wouldn't suggest steel wool, as you don't want any iron particles on that surface. I would also be careful about actually polishing the surface. You don't want to dull any edges, nor do you want to remove much material. You also will want to clean it with alcohol or something afterwards, since a lot of polishes leave sealing residues after being wiped off.
