Best Turbo for a B-series
hey all, im getting ready to turbo my B16 in my 89 civic hatch and im not sure which turbo application to go with. im buying my friends turbo kit off of his 91 crx but the turbos fried so i'll need to get a new one. my car has pretty much all the bolt ons you can get, cold air intake, headers, exhaust, intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rail, new exedy stage 2 clutch and flywheel, RC 270 injectors, 255lph fuel pump, and my head has a stage 3 port/polish job with dual springs and retainers good for 11K, CTR cams and cam gears, and ferrea dished valves. I was thinking of pushing between 7-9 psi until i can afford to build the bottom end, then i would be running around 20+ psi. i dont want to have to get just a "so-so" turbo now and have to foot the extra cash for a better one when i build the bottom end. i was looking at the Garrett T3/60-1 turbo which has .70 A/R housing and a 60 trim wheel on the compressor and .82 A/R housing with a 76 trim stage 3 wheel on the turbine. i was wanting to keep my price range under $800 and still get something that will work well for both low/high boost applications. Anyone out there got any good advice or suggestions? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Wow...you need to answer a few questions before getting ahead of yourself.
1. What's your budget for the ENTIRE setup?
2. What are your POWER goals (now and later)?
3. What do you need from a turbo...is spool very important or top end power?
4. What fuel grade are you planning to run?
5. Give us more details about the setup you're buying from your friend.
So far, you're not even close to on the right track. A 60-1 .82 ar on a stock B16 is going to have terrible response. Its going to spool really late and not be much fun at all. There are tons of turbocharger variations available and if you can answer the questions above, we can help you find which one fits you best.

sorry, i dont really know ANYTHING about turbo set ups so just bear with me
1. My budget for the entire setup is about $1400 MAX ($500 for my friends setup).
2. Im not sure what my power goals are now, i think i might be sitting just upwards of 200HP at the wheels right now? so maybe if i could get around 260 or 275 at the wheels with 7-9 psi? As far as later goes, i would really like to get upwards of 450HP at the wheels.
3. I would like a turbo that spools FAIRLY quickly (around 4500/5000RPM?)
4. I would just be running pump gas (91 octane)
5. as far as what im getting from my friend, its just a regular old turbo kit from XSPOWER he got off of ebay. you know, no name stuff mostly im sure nothing special or fancy, BOV, 38mm wastegate, intercooler, cast manifold, all the appropriate piping, turbo timer, etc.
Hope this is enough info for you to make some recommendations?
and by the way, this car has been and will always be my daily driver, so definitely no drag applications or any crazy ***** to the wall stuff like that

Well for starters, i'm not a big fan of the turbo kit you're buying, but that's beside the point.
If you want a fun turbo on your B16, you need to again make a decision. You can't have everything in one package. Either you want a good setup for now or a good setup for the future. I would suggest upgrading to a different turbo when the time comes if you build it.
For now, i would run with anything from a T3/T04e 50 trim, 57 trim or a variant of the 57 trim. You shouldn't be willing to sacrifice performance now for a possible setup in the future. Either of the two turbos listed above will make the power you want for now; however, the 50 trim isn't going to make much over 380whp and the 57 isn't going too far beyond 435whp. Having said that, they are a great match for your current setup around 300whp (aka the safe limit on a B series stock block).
If you really want to get fancy, contact TheShodan and ask him about the GT3251e or GT3255b. Those turbos are variants of the 57 trim and are designed to spool faster and be more efficient at lower boost levels. I used the GT3255b on my stock block GSR and had great success with it. I made 315whp/216wtq and had full boost by 3800rpm. Its worth checking out..
