Default Bad ECU?

Quick Question. I put a turbo kit on a buddies car. Car on base map worked fine. Installed the kit, drove the car home. Came back to tune the car and we burned a chip, then the car ran like ****. Trouble shooted everything and nothing worked. Decided to try using my ECU out of my car and see if it worked with his chip. Started up like new. So we figured his ecu went bad for some reason. He goes out and buys another P03, same thing happens. Car runs like ****.

Anyone have a idea why this might be happening?

I have had two ECUs go bad in my car. Both with completely seperate weird problems. First ECU was when I got the car and it was a P72 GSR ecu. It never would idle right, VTEC would never work right, constantly had a code for the O2 sensor, vtec solenoid, and random other sensors. At idle that ecu would try to lock engine into vtec and that sounded terrible. I thought I had a major problem in the valvetrain. Second ECU that went bad the car would randomly not start and all signs pointed to bad main relays because the fuel pump would not prime. Ends up early model P28s from what I was told have been known to have a bad ground in them for the whole main relay circuit.

The thing is though that my p28 runs fine on it. We let the car idle for a few minutes with my ecu and its fine. He just bought another p03 and it doesnt work.

Is there any main difference in the p03 and p28? Im 100% sure the resistor box is wired correctly.

Thanks for the ideas though. keep them coming, this has me stumped.

If you're using Crome, did you remove the checksum when you re-burnt the new chip?

Yes, forgot to add that. No CEL with my P28.

have you tried burning the car to the ground yet? that may fix the problem.

i think there is a wiring problem maybe around the harness area, its an obd2 car, so I know you have a obd2 to obd1 harness, have you swapped that out yet?

the reason I think its wiring is as follows:
1. you put in original chipped ecu and it ran fan with basemap.
2. when you moved ecu to change chip, it didn't work.
3. when you moved ecu/harness to swap ecus, it did work
4. when you move harness/ecu again, it doesn't work.

the common step is you are moving around the harness and such, check all the pins in the harness and make sure there isn't any crazy wires being tapped into the harness. Since its obd2, make sure the harness is cleanly going through the firewall and isn't rubbing where the rubber grommett should be secure.

Did you take the chip out of your P28 and put his chip in your ecu?

Try putting your chip in his ECU and throwing it in your car

My thoughts exactly. That is the only real way to rule out a bad burn on your chip if you didn't swap the chips before.

when this happened to me I thought it was also the ecu... I would put my buddys ecu in my and it would work... put mine in and it would only crank or start but runs like poop... then I got smart and got some rc injectors took the resistor box out and the dsm 450s and put my ecu in... bam it worked just fine... you have a bad injector or bad wiring on the resistor box...

new ecu has an on/off switch next to the chip. with the switch off there's no CEL but with the switch on i get a solid CEL. either way it idles like sh*t (limp mode i guess). makes me think its a bad chip so I bought a new chip with basemap and stil solid CEL when its switched on.
