Default b20 turbo help! gt30 vs gt35

My turbo finally gave out, had a t3/t4 setup on a b20 v-tech and now that its broken its time to upgrade. motor is fully built so my question is whats better on 1/4 mile. gt30 or a gt35 considering i need traction. whats the spool time for both? dont want turbo spool to kick in around 6K rpm and only have 2k of boost. thx

i was looking to do around 450-500hp. i would have to make a new manifold anyways and downpipe since mine is tearing apart (had to re-weld it a few times). t3 flange sounds about right for the turbo

If you're running a stock sleeve B20, i would go with the smaller of the two (even though i wouldn't be limited to just those two choices) because the stock B20 sleeves haven't been known for their strength past 300whp

tell me about it. I'd run a nice S258 T3 .70A/R V-band and call it a day!!

i'm currently in a similar debate myself but it's for a 84mm setup (basically a B20 setup more or less ) in a GSR, in my thread we've collected a few nice comparison graphs between the two if you wanna check that out for yourself and Doostur also has a 2.0L setup here with a 35R and a vid to go along with the results if you want something real world to gauge it to. so far as much as i love my current 30R's response real world wise, the results i'm seeing from the 35R's aren't to bad truthfully. and for a stock sleeve setup, the more room you can give yourself for margin of error (creating less backpressure/heat) the better especially if you're building this car for some 1/4 mile passes (in which i wouldn't think that lag would be much of an issue at all once 1st gears out of the way) so i think the slightly larger turbo wins in this particular argument. but i haven't had experience with both personally so this is just based on what i've observed. my 30R's on the small side but it was great in terms of response on my 81mm setup, could only imagine that it'd work even better on an 84mm setup within reason (you'd be fairly close to max efficiency in the 500whp range which can be both good and bad from what i've read). hehe one things for sure, either way you go, you won't be waiting until 6k for boost to kick in, for what i've seen you'll start seeing boost somewhere around ~4k

84mm in the bore vs the 84mm X 89mm combo is rather different, regardless of what many think. Regardless, it really depends upon what he wants to do out of the car. There are a ton of options both journal and ball-bearing cartridges that are available as opposed to being limited to those 2 options only. Why limit yourself? There are a lot of Garretts & BWs that could work.

well this place i took to get my motor done the 1st time around messed up my motor really bad. it was originally sleeved n bored out to 84mm but after driving it around i had a lot of white smoke. to make long story short, when i went to get it tuned at churches they rejected me due to all the smoke coming out from the motor so i took it to another shop (street image) and they re-fixed everything. lets jus say the last place i took it to (r-rated) did a horrible job. they gave me a head that had a lot of hot spots and didnt seal down the v-tec line that was causing fuel to come out and the place they took my block to bored out 3 cylinders to 84 but the 4th cylinder was bored out to 84.8 i believe. now i had no choice but to resleeve the whole block again but instead to make the block still usable they bored it out to 85. the block was machined and sleeved by cosworth. so now after getting my car tunned and ran it at the tracks once, probably ran it 3-5x on the tracks my turbo gave out. the turbo was rebuilt by r-rated and the bearings came off that newly rebuilt turbo. so that is how im coming to a conclusion if i should go w/ a gt30 or gt35

Actually, you didn't address ANYTHING related as to why only a GT30 or GT35. You only talked about the engine, the shop, and the issues you had with both. That has nothing to do with a turbo choice, but whatever you decide, just be sure you're happy with it. *chuckle*.

i was just addressing that the motor was sleeved and bored out to 85mm instead of of stock block that they were mentioning but im sure i will love both size turbo. was just wondering what would be better overall for my motor setup and 1/4 mile ^_^

With the larger 85mm engine, you should have no trouble spooling either turbo. Considering you stated that it would be more for the 1/4 mile time, i would suggest a larger turbo. Personally, i would look at the S366 or S368 Borg Warner. Not only are both of those going to be comparable in price, but they will easily make the same power if not more than the GT35r. Its something to at least consider before picking your new turbo. Many people have had great success with the new BW ETT line (both S200 an S300)
