Default AWIC opinions?

Hey guys!

I want to revisit something I thought I had settled a long time ago.

As my 1.8T project nears completion, I'm starting to wonder if my AWIC setup is going to be efficient enough to run high boost on this motor.

I have all my AWIC stuff from my previous project, which was a 2.0T running ~12 psi. I never finished hooking it up, so I don't have any experience with how well it works.

My concern now is that that I will be running more boost, ~20 psi from a T3/T04B Super S-3 trim. This turbo doesn't like anything over 15 psi, so I'm worried. I plan on upgrading to either a T3/T04E 57 trim or GT3071R.

Can my little 4x6" PWR AWIC efficiently cool the air charge and keep me safe running 25+ psi, provided the rest of the system is designed properly? (Large water reserve, large front-mount radiator etc ...)

The main reason I went AWIC was to keep the car looking stock, and to try something different. I would really like to stick to it, but I don't think I want to give up any efficiency just to achieve this.

Discuss ...

Thanks guys!

This is the only pic I have of it at the moment:

I cant really help you specificaly.

Check out http://www.vwvortex.com
A lot of really good info on there with tons of people who would be glad to help.

From what I understand AWIC ar mainly used on drag/race cars. This is because you can fill the resivior with ice water and effectiavly drop the air temp way below ambient. I would imagine that on a DD the AWIC would eventually become less effectiave than a regular IC because the water would become concideriably warmer that the ambient air temp.

I did a setup with an Air to water intercooler once.

it it still functionnal and the guy's ride it pretty hard, on a B18B, with 12 Psi, 5 Gallon tank, with smal front mount radiator.

he is running prestone into the system as well to help the water heat exchange property.

water is comming really hot in a short period of time, and on hot sunny day's, he does hear detonation some time on hard boosting.

I dont think 25 + pound on this setup is the way to go safely... although, the combination of both AWIC and FMIC will yeild the colder air possible with ice into the tank...

hope this help!

will it work...yes

will it be the best performing....most certainly not...

i can see some huge changed id make it you setup already...just in placement...keep the heat out of the system...and youll have far fewer problems...

Keep in mind that this pic is from my old 2.0L 8v motor, I'm now putting it on a 1.8L 20V motor. Placement is much different now. I know the location I had it in before was really bad, it would heat soak like a mother and basically act as an "interheater".

On the new setup, it would most likely be placed in the left front corner of the bay, hugging the side, basically where the coilpacks are in the above pic.

Now I'm really rethinking it. I would hate to use a front mount, but I really don't want to run a half-assed charge cooling system. I wonder if adding another barrel to this setup would be an option.

Thanks for your time guys!
